Depression is a serious and widespread mental health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, over 17 million adults in the United States experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2020, with the highest prevalence occurring in young adults aged 18-25 (NIMH, 2022). College students face unique stressors and life adjustments that may place them at increased risk for developing depressive symptoms. While transitioning to college brings academic, social, and personal challenges, contemporary college students also navigate this major life transition amidst the rapid rise of social media technology.
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter have become ubiquitous in daily life, with over 70% of U.S. adults reporting social media use (Pew Research Center, 2021). College-aged young adults comprise some of the heaviest users of social networking sites. Concerns have arisen regarding potentially negative psychological impacts of excessive and problematic social media engagement, including impacts on mood and well-being (Reed et al., 2022). Exposure to idealized portrayals on social media has been linked to increased body dissatisfaction, particularly for young women (Fardouly & Vartanian, 2016). Additionally, comparing one’s life to others’ seemingly perfect online presentations may foster feelings of inadequacy, envy, and depression (Keles et al., 2020).
Some recent research specifically tying social media use to depression in college students has yielded mixed results. For instance, one study found no direct association between daily time spent on social networking sites and elevated depression symptoms in college freshmen (Shensa et al., 2017). Another study found positive correlations between Instagram use intensity and depression, anxiety, and perceived social isolation among undergraduate females (McLean et al., 2021). A meta-analysis pooling data from over 12,000 participants across 32 studies concluded that while social media use alone may not directly cause depression, excessive or problematic use is associated with small but significant increases in depressive symptoms (Lin et al., 2016). Much of this research has relied on self-report measures and has not distinguished passive followership from more active engagement on these platforms. Additionally, mediating variables like perceived social support and self-esteem have not been fully explored.
Given the contradictory findings to date and limitations of previous research, further objective investigation into the relationship between social media use patterns and depression in college students is warranted. The present research aims to build on and address gaps in the existing literature by assessing associations between objectively logged social media behaviors, self-reported mental health symptoms, and potential mediating personal factors in a sample of undergraduate psychology students. Specifically, this study seeks to:
Objectively quantify daily social media use behaviors like time spent, posts/comments made, likes/reactions given through downloaded usage metrics from participants’ personal accounts.
Administer validated self-report measures of depression symptom severity, anxiety, perceived social support, self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and social comparison tendencies.
Determine if specific social media behaviors and engagement styles (passive vs. active) correlate with elevated depression or anxiety scores after controlling for relevant covariates.
Test whether personal factors like perceived social support, self-esteem, body image, and social comparison partially mediate any identified relationships between social media metrics and mental health symptoms.
It is hypothesized that greater daily time spent and more active engagement like posting/commenting on social media will positively correlate with increased depression and anxiety scores. It is expected that mediating personal factors may help explain part of this relationship. The findings could help inform targeted interventions and policies regarding healthy social media use, support for at-risk college students, and public mental health initiatives for young adults. Overall, the current study aims to provide a more nuanced examination of links between social media engagement patterns and indicators of well-being in emerging adults negotiating this major life transition period.
