Growing up in a small rural town, I understood from a young age the value of community support and giving back. As the eldest child of hardworking parents, I learned early on the importance of responsibility and helping those around me. These formative experiences shaped my desire to make a positive impact and help empower underserved communities.

Howard University’s mission of empowering communities in need through education strongly resonates with my personal goals and values. As the only historically Black university with a distinguished reputation as a top-tier research university, Howard plays a critical role in creating opportunities for people of color and addressing societal inequities. I am particularly drawn to Howard’s focus on developing well-rounded leaders who will go on to make a difference. The university’s emphasis on social justice, civic engagement, and culturally-aware scholarship is exactly the kind of intellectual environment I seek.

My interest in community service and social justice issues began in high school, where I joined numerous volunteer organizations. As president of our school’s chapter of Key Club, I organized food and book drives as well as community clean-up efforts. I also tutored underprivileged elementary students through a Big Brothers Big Sisters program. These early volunteer activities strengthened my understanding that education is the key to overcoming adversity and creating lasting change. They also highlighted the importance of lifting up those facing challenges through compassion and solidarity.

My passion for empowering marginalized groups grew during my time at Beloit College. As the chair of their Asian American Student Association, I planned cultural events and lectures with the goal of promoting diversity and inclusion on our predominantly white campus. I sought out research and advocacy opportunities related to issues facing communities of color as well. For example, in my junior year I interned with a nonprofit that provided legal assistance to low-income immigrant families. There I helped address language barriers and advocate for clients dealing with employment and housing discrimination. These experiences strengthened my resolve to pursue a career dedicated to social justice.

Last summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with the civil rights division of the Department of Justice. I assisted attorneys investigating racial discrimination complaints against government agencies and employers. This eye-opening position gave me valuable exposure to impact litigation aimed at dismantling systemic inequities. It also fostered my interest in pursuing a law degree with a focus on anti-discrimination law and racial justice policy. It also reinforced how much more work needs to be done to advance equal treatment and opportunity for people of all backgrounds. I understood the critical role that historians, community activists, educators and legal advocates all play in this ongoing struggle.

If selected to attend Howard, I plan to major in African American studies with a focus on the intersection of education, social policy and community development. The ability to examine societal issues through an explicitly anti-racist lens is incredibly appealing. Howard’s interdisciplinary approach to understanding the experiences of Black communities both historically and presently would provide a nuanced analytical framework for my research and future career trajectory. I also look forward to gaining international perspectives through Howard’s renowned study abroad programs in Africa and the Caribbean.

Beyond the classroom, I aspire to continue advocating for marginalized groups as a student leader at Howard. Organizations like the NAACP College Chapter and ASB – the umbrella group for over 150 student organizations – facilitate impactful activism and community partnerships. I envision helping plan social justice conferences, organizing skill-building workshops for local youth, and advocating for equitable education policy reforms both in DC and nationwide. Howard’s commitment to cultivating thoughtful, compassionate change agents is precisely why I believe the university is the right fit to help me achieve my goals.

Most of all, I want the opportunity to give back to a university and community that have done so much to advance social justice. Howard’s rich history and continuing efforts to develop leaders who will improve lives is deeply inspiring.
