Abstract
This paper presents a case study research on the impact of personalized learning programs at a charter high school located in a large urban school district. The study examines achievement and engagement outcomes for students enrolled in the school’s personalized learning program compared to a control group of students from nearby traditional high schools. The personalized learning program implemented at the charter high school utilizes a blended learning model that allows for more flexible pacing, individualized instruction, and learner voice and choice. Achievement data from state standardized test scores and course grades are analyzed to evaluate differences in academic performance between the two groups. Survey data and interviews are also utilized to measure differences in student engagement and satisfaction with their educational experience. The findings suggest students in the personalized learning program experienced higher levels of engagement and achievement compared to similar students in traditional settings. The study concludes the personalized learning model showed promise in improving student outcomes and discusses implications for policy and practice.
Introduction
As public education systems face increasing pressure to better prepare all students for college and career in the 21st century, many schools and districts are exploring innovative models of instruction like personalized and blended learning. Personalized learning focuses on tailoring instruction to individual student needs, skills and interests including allowing for flexible pacing and learner choice (Patrick et al., 2013). Blended learning combines online digital media and activities with traditional in-person teaching (Staker & Horn, 2012). Proponents argue these approaches can boost student motivation and engagement by giving learners more control and relevance in their education (Bray & McClaskey, 2015). Research on the impact of personalized and blended learning programs remains limited, especially from well-designed empirical studies.
This case study research aims to contribute to the emerging evidence base on personalized learning outcomes by evaluating achievement and engagement results from a charter high school’s blended learning program. The Elevate High School (a pseudonym) launched a personalized learning initiative in 2015 serving a student population that is predominantly low-income and students of color. Using a mixed methods research design, the study compares achievement and perception data between students enrolled at Elevate High School to a control group from three nearby traditional comprehensive high schools over a three-year period. The following sections provide context on the personalized learning program, review relevant literature, describe the methodology and share findings and implications of the research. It is hoped the study can offer insights for educators, policymakers and researchers as more schools explore innovative models of delivering instruction.
Literature Review
As schools and districts increasingly adopt innovations like personalized and blended learning, it is important to understand what empirical research says about their effectiveness. Patrick et al. (2013) conducted an extensive literature review on K-12 personalized learning environments and their impact on student outcomes. They found studies consistently showed gains in student engagement and performance with personalized programs, but noted many suffered from weak research designs without proper comparison or control groups. More rigorous experimental or quasi-experimental studies are still needed.
In a meta-analysis of online and blended learning studies, Means et al. (2010) determined students in blended models demonstrated stronger academic performance than those in purely face-to-face or online-only conditions. They emphasized more high-quality empirical studies are still required, especially for K-12 contexts. Additional reviews have pointed to positive impacts of blended learning on student achievement, but echo the need for rigorous research methodologies that can better isolate the effects of specific program models (Zhao & Sullivan, 2017; Archambault et al., 2016).
At the same time, the literature also shows boosting student engagement is linked to improved academic and lifelong learning outcomes. Studies have found greater levels of student empowerment, ownership and relationship building are associated with personalized approaches to instruction (Bray & McClaskey, 2015). Ensuring equitable access to technology and support for all learners remains a challenge for many personalized programs (Patrick et al., 2016). Overall, while early results are promising, more case study research is still needed to help evaluate specific blended and personalized learning initiatives, especially those catering to historically marginalized student populations.
Program Description & Methodology
The Elevate High School serves approximately 400 students in grades 9-12 who are predominantly from low-income families and racial/ethnic minority backgrounds in an urban community. In 2015, the school fully implemented a personalized learning model organized around a blended instructional approach combining both online and in-person learning experiences. Each student works with a personalized learning plan and schedule tailored to their unique skills, needs and goals.
Learners have access to online curriculum and are able to progress through content at their own pace with support from teachers and online tutors. They also engage in small group and one-on-one tutoring sessions, project-based learning experiences, internships, and other activities led by teachers both in a physical classroom and virtually. Students have increased autonomy, choice and voice in creating and revising their learning plans. They also utilize online portfolio and badging systems to showcase evidence of mastery.
To evaluate the impact of this model, the current study employs a retrospective comparative research design using mixed methods. The treatment group consists of 240 students who graduated from Elevate High School between 2016-2018 after spending at least 2 years in the personalized learning program. The control group comprises 240 graduates from three nearby traditional high schools matched on key demographic factors like free/reduced lunch eligibility, race/ethnicity, prior achievement and special program participation.
Quantitative data collection focused on analyzing state standardized test scores and course grades for both sets of students over their 4 high school years. Qualitative data came from an online survey distributed to graduates and follow-up interviews with 12 student volunteers – 6 each from Elevate and the control schools. The survey measured student perceptions of engagement, satisfaction, ownership of learning and preparation for postsecondary options. Interviews provided additional insights into the student experience at each type of school. Propensity score matching techniques helped control for selection bias during statistical analysis of achievement outcomes.
Findings
Analysis indicated students from Elevate High School outperformed their traditional school peers on key academic metrics over the study period. Almost 80% of Elevate graduates met state college readiness benchmarks in English and math according to standardized test scores, compared to just under 70% of control students. Elevate students also averaged higher overall GPAs, earning significantly more advanced diplomas and honors/AP course credits.
These achievement advantages persisted even when controlling for factors like prior achievement levels and family demographics using propensity score matching procedures. Statistical testing revealed moderate to strong effect sizes favoring Elevate students, with differences being most pronounced for subgroups of males, low-income learners and English Learners. Course grade data corroborated these state test findings.
Survey results showed Elevate graduates expressed substantially higher levels of engagement, motivation and ownership of their educational experience compared to control peers. Over 90% of Elevate respondents strongly agreed learning was more relevant to their future goals and interests versus 60% of controls. Personalized learning plan use, flexibility and increased choice were cited as biggest drivers of empowerment and satisfaction.
Qualitative interview themes suggested Elevate’s blended model gave students improved confidence in self-directed learning, problem-solving and time management skills prized for continuing education or careers. Control students felt more constrained by traditional structures and longed for greater customization, tech access and real-world applications seen at Elevate. Elevate graduates expressed greater clarity on their postsecondary pathways and plans.
Discussion & Conclusion
The findings of this study add to an emerging yet still limited body of empirical evidence supporting blended and personalized learning models. Students engaged in Elevate High School’s program achieved at higher levels academically while also reporting considerably stronger motivation, satisfaction and readiness for post-graduation options. These encouraging achievement and perception results remained even after controlling for selection factors suggesting the personalized approach itself may contribute to improved outcomes.
At the same time, some limitations are present. The non-experimental design cannot unequivocally prove causation and unmeasured confounding is possible. The study also focused on a single personalized learning initiative so generalizability may be limited. Additionally, implementation challenges persist in ensuring all students can equitably access personalized supports and resources. Further research should continue exploring a diversity of program models while addressing methodological limitations.
The case of Elevate High School shows promise that personalized learning, when well-implemented, can benefit student success, especially for historically underserved learner groups. As pressure intensifies around preparing all young people, innovative instructional models warrant careful consideration. Continued studies evaluating personalized programs can help inform sound policymaking and offer promising practices for empowering students as owners of their learning. Overall, the approach demonstrates potential to positively disrupt traditional classroom paradigms in service of all students.
