The global economy has become increasingly interconnected over the past several decades due to rising international trade and the continued innovation of delivery networks. Manufacturers, retailers, and other companies have come to rely on intricate supply chains that source materials from around the world and transport final goods to consumers on every continent. There is virtually no company today that can succeed without effectively managing its inputs, production processes, and distribution channels.
Given the critical role that supply chains play in business, a degree in Supply Chain Management has strong career prospects and opportunities for positive social impact. Successful supply chain professionals can help reduce waste, lower costs for consumers, and facilitate global development. My interest in Supply Chain Management was sparked during my undergraduate studies in Operations Research, where I learned how analytical techniques can be applied to optimize inventory levels, transportation routes, facility locations and other components of the supply chain. I enjoyed the blend of business skills and quantitative problem-solving involved. For my senior project, I collaborated with a local manufacturer to analyze inefficiencies in their warehousing and distribution network, and propose areas for improvement. Applying operations research concepts in this real-world setting exposed me to the complex, multi-faceted nature of supply chain challenges facing businesses today.
After graduating, I worked as an Operations Analyst for an electronics manufacturer. In this role, I gained hands-on experience with demand forecasting, material requirements planning, production scheduling, and inventory management. I saw firsthand how disruptions anywhere in the upstream or downstream supply chain could negatively impact operations and customer satisfaction. This experience confirmed my interest in supply chain as a career path, where leadership skills, broad business knowledge and analytical acumen are required to coordinate activities across a global enterprise.
By pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Supply Chain Management, I aim to further develop my strategic and managerial abilities. The curriculum will provide exposure to topics like supply chain design, project management, data analytics, procurement, and sustainability that are crucial for success in this field. An advanced degree from your highly-regarded program will position me for mid to senior-level supply chain roles where I can apply my passion for operational excellence to help companies streamline processes, reduce costs and better serve end customers.
Through courses, networking events and potential internship opportunities available via your MBA program, I also hope to gain exposure to diverse industries and company sizes. In ten years, my goal is to be a director or vice president of supply chain management responsible for a major business unit or division of a global company. I aspire to innovate processes, implement new technologies like IoT and machine learning, and develop high-performing teams to support my organization’s growth strategies. Beyond work, I also wish to lend my operations expertise pro bono or in an advisory role to non-profits and social ventures seeking to leverage principles of supply chain management for good. It is an exciting time to enter the supply chain management field, and I am eager to pursue an MBA at your prestigious university to build the skills and experiences needed for a fulfilling, impactful career.
