SPREAD THE LOVE...

Good afternoon respected teachers and fellow students. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak about the art of essay writing for SPM examinations. As we all know, the SPM examinations will be taking place in a few months time. One of the most important components is the writing paper, where we are tested on our ability to write coherent and well-structured essays under time constraints.

Essay writing is no simple task. It requires careful planning, organisation of ideas, good command of the language as well as time management skills. With practice and the right techniques, all of us are capable of writing good quality SPM essays. In this speech, I hope to share some useful tips and pointers to help improve your essay writing for exams.

The first and most crucial step is to understand the essay question. Make sure you read and comprehend what the question is asking of you. Circle or underline the key words in the question. These key words provide clues on the central idea and direction of the essay. For example, if the question asks for your opinion, then the essay should focus on giving your own arguments and stance on the issue. On the other hand, if the question is more factual in nature, then the essay must stick to presenting relevant facts, examples and details to support the main points.

After understanding the question, the next step is planning and structuring your essay. A well-structured essay demonstrates effective organisation of ideas which is important for scoring higher marks. Most SPM essay questions follow the basic introduction-body paragraphs-conclusion structure. Spend around 5-10 minutes jotting down points and formulating a basic framework or “plan of attack” before starting to write in full sentences.

Some basic tips regarding structure:

The introduction paragraph should state your main idea or opinion clearly and give an overview of the points to be discussed. It also establishes the context and importance of the topic.

Body paragraphs form the bulk of the essay content. Stick to no more than 3 paragraphs to avoid rambling. Each body paragraph should be dedicated to discussing one key point in depth with relevant examples and explanations. Link the paragraphs cohesively.

The conclusion paragraph rounds up your essay by re-emphasizing your main stance and key points covered, without introducing any new ideas. It provides closure to the discussion.

With the question fully understood and an outline planned, start drafting the essay itself. Here are some additional writing techniques to employ:
