Formatting a research paper in Google Docs allows you to easily create professional-looking academic papers while taking advantage of Google Docs’ collaborative features. Whether you’re in high school, college, or beyond, following proper research paper formatting guidelines is essential for success. Here are step-by-step instructions for properly formatting your research paper in Google Docs:

Set Up Your Document Layout

Open a new Google Doc and ensure you are using the default body text font and size, which is typically Times New Roman 12 point. This is the standard font and size for research papers.

Set the page margins to 1 inch on all sides. Go to File > Page Setup. Under Margins, select Normal (1 inch all around).

Double space the entire document, including the title page, citations, and reference page. Single spacing saves space but makes the paper harder to read. To set double spacing, go to Format > Line Spacing and select Double.

Number all pages consecutively in the upper right corner half an inch from the top and flush with the right margin throughout the paper, including the works cited/references page. Page numbers are excluded from the title page. To add page numbers, go to Insert > Page Number and select Top of Page or Header from the drop-down menu.

Create a Title Page

Center the title 1/3 of the way down the page. The title should be short but descriptive and contain keywords.

Below the title, type your name, the date, the course name and number, and your instructor’s name, each item centered and on its own line, double spacing between each item.

Title pages do not require headers and should have page numbers in the center at the bottom of the page. The title page counts as page 1, even though the number is not shown.

Start With an Introduction

Begin the introduction on the page immediately following the title page. The heading Introduction should appear centered and in title case (capital letter for the first word only) at the top of the page.

The introduction serves to introduce your topic and establish the scope and direction of your paper. It should end with your thesis statement, which is 1-2 sentences clearly outlining the main argument of your paper.

Format Body Section Headings

Primary headings such as “Methods,” “Results,” etc. should be centered and in title case for published papers or academic disciplines. If available, consult your instructor’s preferences on heading styles.

Secondary headings (subsections under primary headings) are flush left, bold, with title case capitalization and end with a period.

Tertiary headings (subsections under secondary headings) are italicized, flush left with sentence-style capitalization and end with a period. Indent any following text 1/2 inch.

Add In-Text Citations

All source material cited in the body of the paper requires an in-text citation consisting of the author’s last name and publication year enclosed in parentheses.

After a direct quote, also list the page number before the parentheses. For example: (Smith, 2020, p. 42) or “Quote example” (Smith, 2020, p. 42).

For multiple author citations, list all authors’ last names joined by commas. For three or more authors, use et al. after the first listed author.

Build a References Page

Begin the references page on a new page after the conclusion. Label it as References, centered and in title case.

List citations alphabetically by author’s last name, author and year, or title if no author.

Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations 5-7 spaces or 0.5 inches. Double space between citations.

Be precise with capitalization, punctuation, italics, etc. Consult your discipline’s citation style guide for formatting rules. Common styles include APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian.

Proofread Carefully

Read your paper from start to finish, checking for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, consistency, and formatting.

Proofread aloud or have a classmate or tutor review your paper to catch errors easier. Pay close attention to in-text and references page citations.

Check that your running header, page numbers, margins, citations, headings, and spacing adhere to the required formats. The smallest details matter – typographical errors detract from a professionally presented paper.

Add Finishing Touches

Apply the document theme and styles consistently if using any to maintain a cohesive design. Default styles like Arial or Calibri work too.

Use page breaks to ensure content flows fluidly from one page to the next with no cut-off words or gaps.

Save your paper as a PDF for submission when finished to retain formatting. And congratulate yourself – researching and writing a research paper requires significant effort and time. Proper formatting shows your care in crafting a quality final product.

Following these Google Docs research paper formatting guidelines step-by-step will result in a professionally presented research paper that meets the assignment criteria. Taking the time to learn and adhere to formatting conventions creates a good impression and demonstrates your competence in academic writing. Let me know if you have any other questions!
