The basic format for a 5th grade research paper is very similar to formats used in higher grades. The main sections are the same for most research papers:
Title Page
Introduction
Body
Conclusion
Works Cited/Bibliography

While the topics and depth of research may be more basic than higher grade levels, the structure and organization is still important for 5th graders to learn and follow. Fifth graders are just beginning to develop research skills so guiding them through a standard format helps them learn and improve.

Title Page: The title page should include the title of the paper, the student’s name, the course name or subject (if applicable), and the date. The text should be centered. Make sure the title captures the main topic or question of the paper in a concise yet descriptive way.

Introduction: The introduction should start with an engaging opening paragraph that brings interest to the topic. It needs to clearly state the main topic or question being explored. A thesis statement indicating the main argument or conclusion of the paper usually goes at the end of the intro. Background information can also be included here to orient the reader to key context. The intro should be 2-3 paragraphs.

Body: This is the main content section where research and key information is presented. Fifth grade papers typically have 3-5 paragraphs in the body, depending on the complexity of the topic. Each paragraph should cover a main sub-topic or aspect related to answering the thesis. They need topic sentences stating the focus and concluding sentences summarizing what was covered. Information needs to be carefully integrated from research sources with some summarizing and paraphrasing. Quotes can be used but should not make up the bulk of the information.

Conclusion: The conclusion wraps up the information that was presented. It does not introduce any new content but summarizes the main points covered in the body in relation to supporting the thesis statement from the introduction. It leaves the reader with a full understanding of what was explored and convinces them of the validity of the overall argument. The conclusion is typically 1-2 paragraphs.

Works Cited/Bibliography: This section lists all sources that were directly quoted, paraphrased, or summarized in the paper. It is placed at the end on a new page. Each source should be formatted properly in MLA or APA style depending on what is preferred. Websites, books, articles, etc. should all be included with key details like author, title, publisher, date, etc. to allow the sources to be easily found by the reader.

Fifth grade research papers may also include additional sections like a dedication, table of contents, labeled pictures or diagrams, etc. depending on the topic and preferences of the teacher. Sticking to the core elements above though provides an effective basic structure to guide students through organizing their findings clearly. With practice following these standards, 5th graders can learn fundamental skills in researching, writing, and properly citing work that will serve them well in their future academic career. Providing structure makes the process less overwhelming while still allowing creativity within the framework.
