A research paper outline template is a framework used to organize main ideas and supporting facts into a meaningful paper. Outlining allows students to gather research efficiently while maintaining an organized structure. For 9th grade students, crafting an effective research paper outline is an essential step in the writing process.

The Basic Structure of a 9th Grade Research Paper Outline

All research paper outlines should begin with an introduction. The introductory paragraph should include a hook to interest readers and a thesis statement that clearly articulates the main argument. Directly after the introduction, first level headings are used to separate the main topics of the paper into sections.

For a standard 5 paragraph essay, three first level headings work well to establish the body. Each heading introduces a new topic that supports and expands upon the thesis. Under each first level heading, students can include second level subheadings that break the topic down into more specific points.

To wrap up the paper, an outline should include a conclusion section. The conclusion should briefly paraphrase the thesis and main supporting points. It should not simply restate information but instead provide a sense of closure for readers.

Along with the main sections, it’s also helpful to have a references or works cited page outlined. Students should leave space at the end to properly cite all sources using MLA, APA or Chicago style formatting.

Filling in the Outline

With the basic outline structure in place, students can start populating each section with relevant research. Strong ninth grade research papers rely on varied types of credible sources from the library and Internet. Each main point and subpoint should be supported by a cited fact, statistic, quote or story from research.

For the introduction, students may include background facts on their research topic to establish why it deserves examination. The thesis statement should take a clear stance on a focused topic and be supported throughout the paper.

For each first level heading, jot short 1-2 word summaries of the main topic points to address. Second level subheadings provide the opportunity to delve into more specific supporting details. Outlines keep writing focused while allowing flexibility to expand on topics as research develops.

When drafting the outline, nine graders should aim to cite a range of sources. No more than 30% of citations should come from any single source. Varied perspectives strengthen objective analysis required at this level. Students often encounter wider perspectives through books, academic journals and .gov websites on many research topics.

Refining and Formatting the Outline

Once initial research ideas are outlined, students refine by reorganizing and streamlining content. Weaker points can be cut or consolidated if not essential to the thesis. Concise and cohesive organization is key to a successful research paper.

The final outline should follow standard formatting guidelines for clarity. Main headings are centered and typed in bold, uppercase letters. Second level subheadings are centered and italicized, with a hyphen (-) separating the subheading from the point. Additional indents create hierarchy between levels of information.

A research paper outline template in Word makes formatting consistent across pages. Page numbers allow easy navigation and ensure all required elements are included. Taking the time to thoughtfully structure the outline will save significant writing headaches later on. Outlines help ninth graders to gain expertise on their topic through organized, well supported research.
