Action research is a reflective process of progressive problem-solving led by individuals working with others in teams or as part of a “community of practice” to improve the way they address issues and solve problems. Writing an action research essay involves describing an issue or challenge that you or your organization currently face, systematically collecting data to better understand it, and using your findings to develop an action plan or solution to address it.

While there is no single correct structure for writing an action research essay, most include some core components:

Introduction (1000-1500 words)

Clearly state the issue, challenge, or question you are researching and why it is important or worthy of study. Identify the main stakeholders or groups affected.
Briefly define action research and explain why you chose this methodology to address the issue.
State the purpose or goal of your research and provide an overview of what you will cover in the essay.

While focusing on core elements like the introduction, literature review, methods, findings, discussion and conclusion – action research essays allow for flexibility in their structure. The length and proportion of each section may vary depending on your topic, available data sources, goals of the research, and intended audience. Regardless, thorough documentation of the research process from planning through implementation of solutions is key. Action research aims not just to understand a problem academically, but to enact real, positive change through collaborative inquiry. Your essay should reflect this underlying philosophy.
