APA Citation Format Example Research Paper

The American Psychological Association (APA) citation format is one of the most widely used styles for writing scientific papers, particularly in the social sciences. When properly cited, sources that are used for research allow the reader to follow up on an idea or find more information about the topic. It also gives credit to the authors whose work contributed to the paper. An APA citation example research paper will be discussed here along with guidelines for properly citing sources within the paper and references section.

The first aspect of APA citation format that is important to understand is in-text citations within the body of the paper. Any time a direct quote or paraphrase is included, an in-text citation with the author’s last name and year of publication must be inserted. For a direct quote, the page number is also included. For example:

(Smith, 2020)
(Smith, 2020, p. 5)

If the author’s name is already mentioned in the sentence, only the date needs to be included in parentheses. For example:

Smith (2020) found that…

When citing a source with two authors within the text, they are joined with an ampersand:

(Jones & Smith, 2019)

If the source has three or more authors, the first author’s last name and “et al.” is used in all in-text citations:

(Johnson et al., 2018)

Some key points regarding in-text citations:

They are placed wherever a source is cited within a sentence, not as a footnote.

They provide brief information to point reader to full reference in reference list.

Author’s last name and date are sufficient if woven into sentence.

Direct quotes also require page number.

The reference list appears at the end of the paper and provides full bibliographic details for all sources cited. All references are double spaced and listed alphabetically by the author’s last name. If there is no author, the title is used alphabetically. Some key guidelines:

Journal article – Author(s). (Date). Article title. Journal Title, Volume(Issue), Page range.

Book – Author(s). (Date). Book title. Publisher.

Chapter in edited book – Author(s) of chapter. (Date). Chapter title. In Editor(s) of book (Eds.), Book title (Page range). Publisher.
