The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is a loosely defined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious or unexplained circumstances. The triangular area measures roughly 500,000 square miles and extends from Florida to Bermuda to Puerto Rico. Over the years, it has developed a reputation as an area where strange phenomena can occur that defy scientific explanations.
While tales of strange occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle have circulated since the 1950s, the area first gained widespread public attention in a 1974 article by Vincent H. Gaddis in Argosy magazine. Gaddis popularized the idea that mysterious Navy plane and ship disappearances that occurred in the area were connected and might be explained by unusual events, natural or perhaps paranormal forces, taking place within the confines of the Triangle. Since then, dozens of books have been published about the topic and numerous theories have been put forth to try and explain the multiple ship and aircraft that have gone missing or been damaged within its waters over the past several decades. Some believe unusual magnetic fields, extraterrestrial forces, ancient aliens, sea monsters, or even rogue waves are possible explanations. Other writers claim that the amount of genuine disappearances has been exaggerated and that most can be explained by normal factors like weather and navigational errors.
While past searches for definitive proof of unusual activity within the Bermuda Triangle have found only explanations based on normal or paranormal forces, numerous documented disappearances and accidents remain officially unexplained. The region’s combination of tourist appeal, mystery, and ambiguity have ensured it remains an object of intense interest and study to both aviation and maritime experts as well as those seeking paranormal explanations. This paper will aim to conduct an in-depth review of the available records and case studies surrounding disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle, analyze the various theories that have been proposed, and consider whether anomalous activity might be occurring or if rational explanations exist for each recorded incident.
The primary sources of information of disappearances and accidents in the Bermuda Triangle come from the officially documented records of the United States Coast Guard and other governmental agencies responsible for aviation and maritime safety and accident investigations. Supplementary sources include historical records, newspaper articles, passenger and crew manifests, ship logs, and first-hand accounts from eyewitnesses when available. While numerous books and articles have compiled lists of incidents alleged to have occurred in the Triangle, thorough research will focus on cases for which credible primary documentation exists from official or contemporaneous sources. Studying each incident’s circumstances, variables like weather conditions, debris evidence, and salvage findings will help determine the most likely causative factors.
In reviewing the research and theories about the Bermuda Triangle that have emerged since Gaddis drew popular attention to supposed disappearances, it is important to consider all hypotheses proposed both rationally and anomalously. Natural phenomena that have been hypothesized to play a role include methane gas eruptions (rising from undersea deposits), rogue waves, and turbulent weather patterns caused by the Gulf Stream meeting cold North Atlantic currents. Geomagnetic forces theories point to unusual occurrences involving compass variations and electromagnetic effects interfering with instrumentation. More extreme notions involve ancient alien visitations, tests of top-secret military technology, or interdimensional vortexes and wormholes as potential explanations. Submarine volcanic activity, exposed or submerged reefs, and hurricanes are also common rational arguments made.

Factors like mechanical failures, human errors, or evidence the situation was due to natural hazards must be conclusively proven or disproven before other potential factors could rationally be considered. For incidents lacking reasonable explanation after exhaustive consideration of conventional causes, further research may be warranted to explore the likelihood of other hypotheses. Only by systematically analyzing each recorded case using verifiable documentary evidence can a rational determination be reached about whether anomalous activity is truly a plausible factor in any Bermuda Triangle disappearances.
The Bermuda Triangle has captured imaginations for decades as a location seemingly prone to strange and tragic losses at sea and in the air that defy conventions logical explanations. To determine if theories proposed about anomalous or paranormal events truly hold credibility requires extensive research into specific documented incidents without preconceptions. This paper aims to accomplish such an objective analysis through a comprehensive review and case study approach, critically examining evidence and official findings for each event while considering all proposed hypotheses. Only through meticulous investigation of verified documented cases using observable facts can a rational conclusion be drawn about what really occurs, or does not occur, within the mysterious and intriguing region known as the Bermuda Triangle.
