The Bluebook citation style refers to a style guide that sets the standards for legal citations in the United States. These formats are commonly used for writing legal research papers and law reviews. While legal papers themselves follow a strict IRAC structure, research paper abstracts still need to effectively summarize key elements in a concise yet informative manner.

A properly formatted Bluebook research paper abstract should contain between 150-250 words and follow a specific structure and style. The purpose of an abstract is to provide readers with a succinct overview of the full paper and evaluate if it is relevant for their research needs. An effective abstract captures the essence of the topic, theoretical framework, methodology, key findings, and implications – all within a limited word count.

The first sentence of a Bluebook abstract format should state the research topic or issue addressed in the paper. This helps establish the overall context and sets the stage for the remainder of the summary. For example, “This paper examines the evolving legal definitions of domestic partnerships under California family law statutes.”

The second sentence briefly describes the theoretical or analytical framework through which the topic is explored. This provides insight into the lens or approach taken. For instance, “Applying principles of statutory interpretation, this study analyzes changes to California’s domestic partnership laws between 2000-2020.”

Details on the methodology come next. The abstract should clarify how information was collected and analyzed. For a legal research paper, this may state which primary and secondary sources were reviewed. As an example, “Legislative histories, case law, law reviews and government reports from the period were reviewed through LexisNexis and Westlaw databases.”

Key findings should then be highlighted within 1-2 concise sentences. Avoid lengthy paraphrases and directly state the most significant results or conclusions. For example, “The study found that while the rights afforded to domestic partners expanded over time, full marital status was not achieved until the legislature passed the Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003.”

The final part provides implications or importance. Briefly note how the findings contribute to existing literature, assist practitioners, or influence related policies. For instance, “This comprehensive analysis of California’s domestic partnership laws over two decades establishes an important benchmark for other states considering recognition of same-sex relationships.”

It is important that a Bluebook abstract maintains consistent formatting with the full paper. Headings, font, spacing and citations should all match based on the selected Bluebook citation style (e.g. 20th edition styles). Furthermore, third person passive voice (“the study found”) rather than first person (“I found”) is appropriate. Abbreviations may also be used if defined upon first mention.

A well-structured Bluebook research paper abstract allows readers to efficiently gauge the overall scope, analysis and contributions of a legal study. By consciously addressing each key element – topic, framework, methodology, findings, and implications – within the prescribed word limit, authors can effectively summarize their work for the intended audience using Bluebook style guidelines. An abstract following this format serves as an excellent preview and marketing tool for the full paper.
