In terms of process and rigor, the thesis follows formalized steps and procedures defined by a student’s program and academic institution. Most programs require students to propose, defend, and publicly present their thesis research findings. Thesis assessment is highly evaluative with strict guidelines and the expectation of publication quality work. In contrast, capstones feature less defined processes that are more self-directed learning experiences with instructor guidance. A capstone provides an opportunity to holistically demonstrate and apply a range of skills and knowledge gain through a program in a more applied manner typically over a single semester or year. Depending on career and educational goals, either can appropriately serve as a culminating demonstration of a student’s acquired competencies and intellectual independence. With their differences clearly understood, academic advisors can best guide students to select the option best serving their needs and aspirations.
