Introduction:

As the semester comes to a close, it seems like an appropriate time to reflect on my overall experience in English 101 – Introduction to College Writing. This class was my first college level English course after transferring from community college last fall. Going in, I was both nervous and excited to take the next step in my education at a 4-year university. Now, wrapping things up, I feel I have gained important knowledge and skills that will serve me well in my future courses. In this essay, I will discuss several key aspects of my English 101 class including the curriculum, assignments, instructor, classroom environment and how it has impacted my development as a student.

Curriculum:

The curriculum for English 101 focused on developing foundational skills in critical thinking, research, and academic writing. We explored a variety of writing styles including argumentative essays, literature analyses, research papers and more. I found the staged approach to each assignment very helpful – beginning with brainstorming, followed by outlining, drafting and revising. This process taught me the importance of planning and structure when composing complex written work. Additionally, we learned about proper citation styles, researching academic databases, and avoiding plagiarism. These “soft skills” are certainly useful beyond this particular class. Overall, I felt the curriculum effectively introduced me to college-level expectations for research, writing mechanics and engaging with course materials on a deeper analytical level.

Assignments:

Some of the major assignments for this class included short response papers, a literary analysis essay, an argument-based research paper, and a final portfolio compiling our best work. These assignments progressively increased in complexity and scope which helped build my skills over the course of the semester. The short response papers gave valuable low-stakes practice analyzing assigned readings. For the literary analysis, having experience breaking down short texts prepared me to tackle a longer work of literature. Creating an annotated bibliography for the research paper introduced me to properly sourcing and citing outside materials. Finally, compiling a portfolio reflective of my growth as a writer provided an excellent learning experience. I found the assignments appropriately challenging without being overwhelming. The support from the instructor was instrumental in my ability to succeed on each task. Overall, I felt the assignments effectively applied and reinforced the course material.

Instructor:

The instructor, Professor Smith, played a big role in creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. Her teaching style was approachable yet demanding of our best efforts. She provided clear assignments descriptions and learning objectives to keep us on track. Her feedback on writing drafts was insightful and actionable. She challenged us to view topics from different perspectives through in-class discussions. In addition, her enthusiasm about the subject matter and interest in our individual progress motivated me to fully participate. Office hours were also a valuable resource to get help when needed. Professor Smith clearly had extensive knowledge of her field but was not above acknowledging where she too was still learning. It was empowering to have an instructor treat us as colleagues in the pursuit of knowledge. I felt her guidance was crucial to pushing myself outside my comfort zone and achieving more than I thought possible.

Classroom Environment:

The classroom itself fostered an environment conducive to learning. Class sizes were kept small at around 20 students so everyone could contribute to discussions. We sat in a semicircle formation facing the instructor to facilitate engagement and group work when necessary. Ground rules like respectful exchanges of ideas and avoiding distractions from technology created an open yet focused space. My peers brought a diversity of experiences and perspectives that enriched our conversations. While competitive at times, most students seemed invested in each other’s success as well. I appreciated opportunities to provide peer feedback and learn from others’ writing skills. These supportive dynamics helped diminish any anxiety around public speaking or putting my ideas out there for criticism. Overall, the cohesive and collaborative atmosphere boosted my confidence as both an individual and group participant.

Impact on Development:

Reflecting on English 101, I can say this course has positively impacted my development as a student in several important ways. From a skills perspective, I have grown as a writer – improving my ability to articulate ideas through structured and well-supported arguments. I also have a stronger foundation for conducting research and navigating academic library databases. On a personal level, I have gained confidence in my analytical abilities and public speaking skills from class discussions. I now feel equipped to succeed in upper division courses across disciplines requiring sophisticated writing and critical thinking. This transformative learning experience was only possible due to the thoughtful blending of curriculum, meaningful assignments and a nurturing instructive environment. I leave the class feeling like both a stronger scholar and proactive learner. The tangible and intangible benefits of English 101 have undoubtedly prepared me to excel in my future academic endeavors.
