What is a Research Paper Abstract?

An abstract is a short summary of your research paper, usually about 150-250 words. It provides a brief overview of your paper’s purpose, thesis, findings, and conclusions.

Writing an abstract is an essential part of your research paper as it allows readers to quickly understand what your paper is about and whether it will be useful for their needs. An abstract is placed at the beginning of your paper, acting as a preview and guiding the reader on what to expect.

While summaries are used to reiterate main points, abstracts are used to highlight key elements that will be discussed in depth in the paper such as the topic, research questions, participants, methods, analysis, arguments, and conclusions.

It is important to note that an abstract summarizes the paper, but does not evaluate or give the writer’s opinion. It presents the purpose and structure of the paper in a neutral, objective tone.

College Research Paper Abstract Samples

Here are examples of abstracts from college-level research papers in various disciplines to demonstrate formatting, structure and content:

Education Abstract

This study examined the impact of after-school tutoring programs on reading comprehension and test scores of elementary students. A sample of 80 students from two schools participated, with 40 students receiving tutoring two times a week for one hour sessions over a six month period. Pre- and post-testing was conducted using standardized reading tests to measure growth. Results showed statistically significant improvements in reading levels and test scores for students who received tutoring compared to the control group. The findings suggest tutoring programs can help close achievement gaps and support student learning.

Psychology Abstract

Anxiety and stress levels were measured in 100 college students during midterm and final exam periods to determine the impact of academic assessments on well-being. Participants completed surveys assessing stress, anxiety, coping strategies and support systems before and after major exams. Analysis revealed statistically higher stress and anxiety during exam times compared to regular class weeks. Female students and those living independently reported the greatest increases in these measures. Coping strategies involving social support or physical activity showed correlations with lower stress levels. These results indicate the need for stress management resources tailored to students during high-pressure academic periods.

Business Abstract

This study explored how effective leadership styles impact employee motivation, performance and job satisfaction in small businesses. Case studies were conducted of three small companies, interviewing employees across roles and observing managers. Data was analyzed through coding interview transcripts for key themes. Results showed transformational leadership with compassion and respect led to the highest levels of employee motivation and performance. In contrast, authoritarian styles diminished job satisfaction and increased staff turnover. This research suggests small business owners should adopt leadership approaches fostering trust, collaboration and empowerment to retain quality employees and facilitate company growth.

Criminal Justice Abstract

This qualitative research examined perceptions and experiences of police use of force from the perspectives of community members in a mid-sized U.S. city. Through focus group interviews, 30 residents shared views about relationships with law enforcement, views on appropriate versus excessive force, and suggestions for improving police-community dynamics. Thematic analysis revealed distrust of police due to lack of transparency around use of force incidents and concerns about disproportionate force against people of color. Participants emphasized the need for officer diversity, community policing programs, and independent citizen oversight boards. The study concludes with recommendations for policy reforms and practices to build accountability and trust between police and the public they serve.

English Literature Abstract

This paper analyzed recurring symbols and motivations in the novels of American author Sylvia Plath. Through close readings of The Bell Jar and Ariel, patterns were identified in Plath’s representations of nature, animals, confinement and escape. Feminist theory guided examination of how these symbols relate to Plath’s exploration of gender roles, identity and autonomy during the 1950s. Analysis showed Nature takes on dual roles as a source of both beauty and danger for the protagonist’s development. Animals signify primal instincts that conflict with social expectations. Settings like windows and jars become barriers and catalysts for confronting realities of womanhood. The study sheds light on Plath’s insight into psychological impacts of gender norms on creative women.

Computer Science Abstract

This research project developed a machine learning model to classify online content as hate speech, abusive or neither. A dataset of over 50,000 tweets was annotated and analyzed to train classifiers using Bag of Words, TF-IDF and convolutional neural network algorithms. Models were evaluated based on precision, recall and F1 scores. The CNN model achieved the highest performance at 0.82 F1, outperforming linear classifiers. Error analysis revealed issues in handling sarcasm and context-dependent interpretations. Implications are discussed for improving automated detection of online toxicity while avoiding over-censorship. Future work includes incorporating pragmatic features to aid understanding of implicit meanings and intent behind problematic posts.

Science Abstract

This study investigated genetic differences in antibiotic resistance between pathogenic E. coli strains isolated from human, livestock and environmental samples. Bacterial DNA was extracted and genome sequencing performed to identify genes conferring resistance to beta-lactam, tetracycline and fluoroquinolone classes of antibiotics. Phylogenetic analysis grouped sequences into clades corresponding to source. A multi-drug resistance efflux pump gene was found in significantly higher prevalence in livestock-associated strains compared to human or environmental isolates. The results suggest manure runoff may disseminate antibiotic resistance from agricultural settings into natural ecosystems. Reducing antibiotic overuse in animal agriculture could help curb spread and development of resistance.

History Abstract

This paper examined the roots and rise of fascism in early 20th century Italy through an analysis of Benito Mussolini’s political tactics and ideology. Primary sources including speeches, writings and propaganda were evaluated in the context of post-WWI social turmoil, frustrated nationalism and anti-socialist sentiment. Mussolini effectively appealed to these factors in establishing the fascist party and articulating a message of restoring Italian pride and dominance through strong, centralized rule. His embrace of populism, militarism and corporatism gained him widespread support yet eroded civil liberties and democratic processes. The research traces how fascism co-opted patriotism while building a cult of personality around its leader to consolidate authoritarian power. Lessons are drawn for recognizing warning signs of such radical, anti-democratic movements today.

Exercise Science Abstract

This study examined effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) versus moderate-intensity continuous training (MCT) on cardiovascular fitness and body composition in sedentary adults. Forty participants were randomly assigned to either 4 weeks of HIIT involving bursts of all-out effort or MCT involving a steady pace, both performed 3 times per week. Fitness was assessed through VO2 max and 1.5-mile run times pre- and post-intervention. Body mass index, waist circumference and percentage body fat were also measured. While both protocols improved fitness significantly, HIIT led to greater enhancements in VO2 max and run performance as well as more fat loss. These results suggest high-intensity intervals may be a time-efficient strategy for improving health and physical capabilities in previously inactive populations.

To summarize, these abstract examples demonstrate the common elements seen across disciplines which include: an introduction to the topic and research questions/purpose, brief methods overview, key findings, and main conclusions. They effectively set the stage for the full research paper by highlighting what will be covered without presenting the in-depth analysis, discussion or entire methodology. With practice writing abstracts, college students can learn to succinctly capture their research and articulate its significance and implications accurately yet concisely.
