Combining Test Formats
Ideally, both essay and objective test items should be combined to get a more comprehensive assessment of student learning. While essay questions evaluate higher-order thinking, objective questions can test foundational knowledge in an efficient, standardized way. Multiple choice or true/false sections can be included in literature or humanities exams to check on basic comprehension. Likewise, math or science tests can incorporate some short or long answer questions to allow students to explain steps or concepts. A balance of both formats gives a robust picture of student abilities.
