Last Friday night I had the pleasure of attending a concert performed by Florence + The Machine at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This legendary British indie pop/rock band has become increasingly popular over the past decade for their soulful sound and frontwoman Florence Welch’s powerful vocals. Having heard much praise for their live shows, I was eager to experience a Florence + The Machine concert for myself. The concert certainly did not disappoint and provided me with an unforgettable night of music that will stick with me for a long time.
The venue, Madison Square Garden, is an iconic location that has played host to legendary performers throughout music history. Walking into the huge arena with its famous circular jumbotron hanging above, you really get a sense of the scope and scale of the show that was about to take place. Even over an hour before the opening act was scheduled to go on, the massive space was already filling up with eager fans. The excitement and buzz in the air was palpable as people settled into their seats, met up with friends, and enjoyed drinks at the concession stands. Overall, the venue set the perfect stage for an epic night of live music.
The support act, London Grammar, took the stage right on time and their dreamy, atmospheric sound filled the arena. Lead singer Hannah Reid’s airy yet soulful vocals soared over tight, intricate arrangements. Standout tracks from their self-titled debut album like “Strong” and “Wasting My Young Years” transported the crowd and had many singing and swaying along. While London Grammar delivered a solid warm-up set, you could tell people were waiting impatiently for the headliner to arrive. After about a 45 minute set, they thanked the crowd and exited to make way for Florence + The Machine.
As the stage was prepared for the main event, the anticipation and energy levels rose even higher in the packed venue. Then, without warning, Florence Welch suddenly emerged center stage alone with an acoustic guitar. She opened a cappella with a stripped back rendition of “What Kind of Man” that had everybody captivated from the very first note of her breathy yet powerful vocals. As her bandmates joined in one by one, the layered instrumentation swelled and filled the spaces. By the explosive climax, the crowd was belting out every word right along with her. It was the perfect way to kick off what would be a showstopping two hour performance.
Over the course of her high-octane set, Florence + The Machine ran through hits from across their three acclaimed studio albums including “Dog Days Are Over”, “Hunger”, “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)”, “Shake It Out”, and “Cosmic Love”. Each song was brought to new life in the live setting with Welles extending notes and runs for extra dramatic effect. You could feel the raw emotion she pours into every lyric. Backed by a full band, her classically-trained voice soared over driving rhythms, thunderous drums, sweeping strings, and airy synths. Whether performing ballads or uptempo rockers, their sound was big, bold, and beautifully cinematic.
What really stood out was the incredible energy Florence maintained throughout. Barefoot and sporting her signature long red nails, she bounded around the entire stage with reckless abandon. At one moment she was bouncing joyfully, the next diving into the crowd or rolling around on the floor. Her endless stamina and passion for performing was infectious – by the end, the entire arena was a sea of dancers lost in the music. She engaged with fans, thanked them profusely, and clearly fed off their enthusiasm. It was mesmerizing to witness such a petite woman commanding such a massive space with just her voice. Towards the climax of “Dog Days Are Over”, she even scaled one of the lighting trusses high above the stage amidst a downpour of golden confetti.
The production values were top-notch as well. Flashes of bright lights, dazzling projected visuals, and bursts of colored streamers enhanced the already dramatic atmosphere. Sometimes the band was shrouded in hazy smoke, other times bathed in a warm glow. A string section, percussionists, and additional musicians filled out their lush sound beautifully. It really felt like an event – a true spectacle for the senses. By the final song “Shake It Out”, the whole arena was a chaotic, bouncing, joyous mess. Everyone left on an incredible high after over two hours of pure euphoria.
It’s clear why Florence Welch and her band have amassed such a dedicated following with shows like this. Their organic, soulful music perfectly captures a spectrum of emotions from melancholy to joyous release. But more than anything, their live performance is a true spectacle that completely transports and engages the audience. For two hours, they create an experience that allows people to forget their worries and fully immerse in the power of music. I can honestly say it was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Florence + The Machine have a rare talent of connecting with crowds on a deep, emotional level through raw, passionate performances. Even a week later, I still find myself reflecting fondly on that unforgettable night at MSG – it’s great to see a band fulfill and even exceed high expectations live. They’ve certainly solidified themselves as true masters of their craft.
