Content standards for writing establish clear expectations for what K-12 students should know and be able to do at each grade level. The goal of content standards is to ensure that students have acquired the skills and knowledge needed to communicate effectively through writing by the time they graduate high school.

In the United States, many states have adopted the Common Core State Standards as their official content standards for English language arts and literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. The Common Core outlines specific standards for writing in four main categories from kindergarten through 12th grade: text types and purposes, production and distribution of writing, research to build and present knowledge, and range of writing.

Text types and purposes focus on three main writing genres: argumentative/persuasive writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing. Standards in this category outline what students should be able to do in terms of writing for different purposes aligned to each genre. For example, by the end of eighth grade, standards require students to be able to write arguments that support claims with clear reasons and evidence, as well as informative pieces that convey ideas and concepts through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

Production and distribution of writing standards involve process, production, and technology. Process standards involve activities like planning, revising, and editing. Production standards address typing fluency and developing a legible handwriting style as appropriate. Technology standards involve using technology to support collaboration, publishing, and presentation of work. For example, by the end of fifth grade students are expected to be able to use technology including the Internet to find information and produce and publish writing individually or collaboratively.

Research to build and present knowledge standards involve the use of short research projects as well as longer ones spanning multiple sources across several weeks. They also address note-taking and paraphrasing skills and the ability to use evidence from literary/informational texts to support analysis and reflection. By twelfth grade, students should be able to conduct sustained research projects and locate, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from multiple sources across various media or texts to create a coherent understanding and presentation of topics or issues.

Range of writing standards focus on writing routinely for a variety of tasks, purposes, and audiences over short and extended time frames, as either timed or untimed writing. For example, by the end of fourth grade students should be able to write routines tasks including practice in expressing themselves through writing and build foundations for college- and career-readiness.

In addition to the Common Core, certain states have adopted writing standards specific to their own state context. For example, California has both a separate set of California Common Core State Standards for ELA and literacy as well as a state-specific writing framework that provides additional depth to the Common Core writing standards. Likewise, Texas has the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards which address writing expectations unique to Texas’ context.

School districts also play a role in developing content standards aligned to state ones but tailored to local contexts. District standards may provide greater clarity, context, or sequencing that best fits students and teachers within that system. Common elements districts might add include rubrics, exemplar student work, pacing guides, and curriculum designed to help teachers implement standards effectively.

Regardless of the specific writing standards adopted, the core expectations serve to prepare students for the literacy demands of postsecondary education and careers. By establishing a rigorous sequence of skills in genres, processes, research, and range of writing, standards aim to develop students into confident, analytical communicators able to thoughtfully convey ideas through writing. Meeting content standards is designed through high-quality instruction to provide equitable access to sophisticated levels of literacy by the time students graduate high school.
