Continuous writing is a creative writing technique where the writer aims to put their thoughts down on paper or screen without stopping for a set period of time. It helps the writer open up their mind to creative associations and think outside of preconceived notions. Rather than letting perfectionism or self-editing get in the way, continuous writing encourages free flowing thought through a stream of conscious writing style.
When undertaking a continuous writing task, it’s important to set a timer and commit to not stopping or going back to edit what has already been written until the time elapses. This removes inhibitions and forces the writer to keep putting words down without overthinking. Common time limits are 5, 10 or 15 minutes but longer 30 minute sessions can also be done. The goal is quantity over quality in the initial drafting stage to let ideas flow unrestrained.
For my continuous writing sample, I will set the timer for 10 minutes and see where my mind wanders without censorship or revision. Here goes:
The old country house loomed large at the end of the long gravel driveway. Ivy crawled up the crumbling stone walls, windows stared out like empty eyes into the surrounding forest. As I pulled up and shut off the engine, an eerie silence descended. I hadn’t been back to this place in over a decade, not since Grandma passed away and left the rambling estate to no one. The lawyer’s letter had been unexpected, instructing me to assess the value of items in the house before it was put on the market.
Steeling my nerves, I swung open the creaking iron gates and started up the winding path. My feet kicked up puffs of dust with each step, nature had been reclaiming the landscape in the years it lay empty. As I walked, snippets of memory came floating back – birthday parties under the old oak tree, hiding from storms in the attic nooks, Grandma’s warm baked goods and stories by the fire. This place held decades of family history but it also hid darker secrets, ones I was never able to uncover even as a curious child.
The front door greeted me with its chipped black paint and tarnished brass knocker shaped like a griffin’s head. I tried the handle and to my surprise it turned, the lock having rusted away long ago. Pushing open the heavy slab of wood, I peered into the gloom beyond. Shafts of sunlight pierced gaps in the boarded up windows, illuminating swirling dust motes. The hallway stretched before me, doors leading off into rooms frozen in time. An overwhelming musty smell assaulted my senses, bringing tears to my eyes. It was as if the house had been waiting, holding its breath for my return.
My footsteps echoed in the hollow silence as I began to explore. Opening the parlor door, I glimpsed remnants of opulent furnishings now shrouded and faded. Grandma’s piano stood open-lidded like a crow watching with hollow eyes. Moving deeper in, the dining room table still held traces of a long abandoned meal. China plates were piled haphazardly, ornate silver tarnished and dull. In the corner, a ragged tapestry swayed as if caught in some unfelt breeze. Each room told another chapter in the decaying storyline of this decaying mansion, a monument to past glory sinking into ruin.
As I climbed the curving staircase, my heart pounded in my ears. Something pulled me ever upwards, an invisible thread tugging me towards long buried secrets. The bedrooms held more relics of lives left behind – abandoned toys, mouldering books, scraps of clothing enduring beyond their owners. One room clearly belonged to a child, the fading remains of sailors and dolphins painted on the walls. Pushing open the attic door took every ounce of will, it’s heavy wooden panels threatening to crush my racing thoughts. A sea of dust greeted me, illuminated swirling in slats of light. And among the boxes and trunks, a glimmer caught my eye…
My 10 minutes are up, I will pause here and reflect on where this continuous writing exercise took me. I seemed to fall naturally into describing an exploration of a mysterious old house holding remnants of the past. Family history and darker secrets were hinted at, pulling the narrator ever deeper inside. An eerie yet intriguing atmosphere developed as hidden memories and mysteries came to light room by room. While not a fully formed story, this writing allowed my imagination to wander freely without self-criticism. Continuing the narrative could unveil what’s concealed in the attic and solve the house’s lingering riddles. Overall, this was a useful creative exercise that stretched my abilities and helped generate new ideas. The next step would be developing and refining elements from this initial draft.
Continuous writing pushes writers outside their comfort zone with its emphasis on quantity over quality. It trains the mind to think on its feet without getting bogged down in perfectionism or reverting to well-worn patterns. While the resulting work may not be polished, it serves as a springboard for discovery. Freed from self-doubt, unexpected connections and unique perspectives can emerge. With practice, loosening internal editing filters becomes easier allowing for fresh insights. Continuous writing is a powerful tool for creativity that I plan to incorporate more regularly into my writing process going forward. Being willing to let ideas flow freely without judgement opens up new creative pathways worth exploring.

By stepping away from fixation on perfect results, it cultivates flexibility of thought. Hidden associations and unexplored avenues can come to light through this stream of consciousness approach.
