Bahasa Inggris memiliki konstruksi kalimat yang disebut dengan conditional sentence. Conditional sentence terdiri dari 3 tipe yaitu type 1, type 2 dan type 3. Berikut ini adalah penjelasan dan contoh soal essay tentang ketiga jenis conditional sentence tersebut:
Tipe 1
Conditional sentence tipe 1 digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kondisi yang mungkin terjadi di masa depan atau masa sekarang. Bentuknya adalah:
If + present tense, … present tense
Contoh:
If I have enough money, I will buy a new laptop.
Artinya: Jika saya memiliki uang cukup, saya akan membeli laptop baru.
If she comes to the party, I will introduce her to my friends.
Artinya: Jika dia hadir ke pesta, saya akan memperkenalkannya pada teman-teman saya.
Berikut ini contoh soal essay yang menggunakan conditional sentence tipe 1:
If I Get a Scholarship
Studying at university is very expensive. As a student, I have to think about how I can afford my tuition fees and living costs. One option I am hoping for is getting a scholarship. If I am awarded a scholarship, it would help me a lot financially. I would not have to burden my parents with the high costs of my education. I would be able to focus more on my studies without having to worry about money. Getting good grades would also be easier if I did not have to juggle my studies with a part-time job. A scholarship would truly change my life as a student for the better. I am working hard to maintain high grades in the hope that I can get recognized and rewarded with a scholarship. Fingers crossed that my efforts will pay off.
Tipe 2
Conditional sentence tipe 2 digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kondisi yang tidak mungkin atau tidak masuk akal terjadi. Bentuknya adalah:
If + past tense, … would + bare infinitive
Contoh:
If I were rich, I would travel around the world.
Artinya: Jika saya kaya, saya akan bepergian keliling dunia.
If she had more time, she would learn to play the piano.
Artinya: Jika dia memiliki lebih banyak waktu, dia akan belajar bermain piano.
Contoh soal essay:
My Dream House
I have always dreamed of living in a big, beautiful house. Considering my current finances, that dream seems quite impossible now. If I were to win the lottery, I would be able to buy my ideal house. It would be a large villa situated in a quiet suburb with big yards and a swimming pool. The interior would be elegantly designed with marble floors and the highest quality furniture. I would have a fully equipped home cinema as well as a wine cellar. Not having to worry about money would allow me to relax and spend my time however I wanted. I could Pursue my hobbies or travel the world. While winning the lottery may just be a pipe dream, it is fun to imagine what I could do if I were suddenly rich. One can always hope and dream!
Tipe 3
Conditional sentence tipe 3 digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kondisi yang tidak mungkin terjadi karena kejadian di masa lalu. Bentuknya adalah:
If + past perfect, … would have + past participle
Contoh:
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
Artinya: Jika saya belajar lebih giat, saya pasti lulus ujian.
If you had listened to my advice, you wouldn’t have failed the project.
Artinya: Jika kamu mendengarkan saran saya, kamu tidak akan gagal dalam proyek itu.

Lessons Learned the Hard Way
Last semester was a real eye-opener for me. I failed one of my most important subjects despite having taken it before. Looking back, I can see that it was because I did not put in enough effort. I wasted too much time socializing instead of studying. If only I had been more disciplined with my time and focused on my academics, things would have turned out differently. If I had studied regularly instead of cramming right before exams, I would have had a better understanding of the concepts. I would not have panicked during the tests. If I had, I am certain I would have passed the subject. This failure taught me some valuable lessons. In the future, I will manage my time better and not procrastinate. I will strive to do my best so there are no ‘what-ifs’ – only success. Sometimes we have to learn the hard way to really learn!
