Critical thinking is the analysis of facts to form a judgment. It involves assessing arguments and evidence in a reasoned manner, identifying fallacious or misleading arguments, appraising facts, and reasoning to form your own conclusions. Critical thinking requires diligently examining the logical connections between ideas and systematically testing one’s assumptions.

There are several important skills involved in critical thinking that leaders must develop in order to make thoughtful decisions and solve complex problems. Five skills are particularly important, and I will explain each in detail below.

The first key skill is understanding arguments. Leaders must be able to identify the main conclusion and premises of an argument, as well as the implied and stated assumptions. It is important to assess whether the premises genuinely support the conclusion through valid reasoning. Be wary of fallacious and misleading lines of thought that obscure facts or persuade through poor logic rather than objective evidence.

The next skill is assessing credibility of sources. Leaders must thoughtfully consider the authority, expertise, and possible biases or conflicts of interest that a source may have. Check facts from multiple credible sources when important decisions hinge upon certain claims or findings. Be on guard against pseudo-facts, propaganda, and “alternative facts.” Subject questionable sources of information to rigorous verification before accepting claims at face value.

A third critical thinking skill is evaluating evidence. Sift carefully through relevant evidence, consider its relevance and strength in supporting specific conclusions, and note any limitations or weaknesses. Do not automatically accept evidence that supports one’s preexisting beliefs; instead weigh evidence fairly and adjust one’s views based on objective findings. Look for patterns and themes when assessing multiple pieces of evidence together as a whole.

Skill four is considering other viewpoints. Actively seek to understand alternative perspectives on an issue instead of rejecting them out of hand. Do not assume one viewpoint has a monopoly on the truth; important nuance and context may come from considering diverse viewpoints collectively. Listen to dissenting voices with an open and inquisitive mind rather than a closed and defensive one.

The fifth and arguably most important skill is drawing well-reasoned conclusions. After thoroughly understanding arguments, sourcing information credibly, evaluating evidence objectively, and weighing different perspectives, leaders must reach their own conclusions through sound analysis and judgment. Clearly and transparently lay out the logical connections between one’s findings on these four other points and the conclusion one has drawn. Leave one’s final conclusion open to continuing scrutiny and possible adjustment in light of new objective evidence or persuasive counterarguments.

Mastering these five core skills of critical thinking is essential for leaders to make enlightened decisions, find innovative solutions, and thoughtfully navigate complex challenges. Critical thinking requires commitment to intellectual humility, conscientious judgment of facts over personalized beliefs, and constantly questioning even one’s own findings to arrive at ever more truthful conclusions over time. Leaders must exemplify critical thinking every day to merit credibility, build trust through transparency, and make progress in tackling our toughest societal issues.
