Thesis
Length: Master’s theses are usually between 50-150 pages. PhD dissertations range from 100-350 pages depending on standards of the university or department.
Structure: Sections include introduction, comprehensive literature review, methodology, results/findings from original research, discussion/analysis, and conclusion. Appendices and references are also included.
Focus: A thesis comprehensively covers a topic area through extensive critical analysis and synthesis of existing research. It offers in-depth rather than narrow perspective.
Sources: Superior theses contain between 50-200 cited sources to substantiate claims and show mastery over breadth of literature. Extensive referencing is expected.
Originality: Successful theses offer a significant original contribution, whether that’s new empirical research, theoretical framework, methodology, or perspective challenging orthodox thinking.
Supervision: Close, regular guidance is given by a primary advisor and committee throughout planning, research and writing stages. Drafts require approval before submission.
Defense: An oral defense before a committee is mandatory to debate merits and respond to questions regarding the thesis. Revisions may be requested post-defense.
Research Paper vs Thesis Format
While content and goals differ, structurally research papers and theses follow similar formats with introduction, body and conclusion sections. Theses feature more comprehensive sub-sections and appendices.
The introduction of a thesis provides far more extensive background and rationale for the topic than a research paper. The literature review in a thesis is also much lengthier, critically examining breadth of scholarly works.
The body of a thesis contains distinct sub-sections for various aspects of methodology, findings and analysis chapters. Research papers integrate methodology and discussion within single body sections.
The conclusion of a thesis offers deeper implications and scope for future work based on original contribution. Research papers primarily summarize main arguments and findings concisely.
Theses also include appendices with data sets, interview transcripts, codebooks, permissions and other supporting materials. Research papers do not require supplemental files in this manner.
