The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) provide guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in English language arts and mathematics. Narrative Essays:

For 7th graders, narrative pieces should demonstrate effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured sequences of events. Students are expected to engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and introducing a narrator and characters. The body should include details and descriptions to develop events or experiences and reveal insights about the characters and plot. An effective conclusion brings closure to the story or experience. Narrative essays provide practice with storytelling techniques and sequencing events cohesively, which builds a foundation for more complex analytical writing expected at higher grade levels.
Argumentative Essays:
Argument essays require researching credible sources to support a claim or position on a debatable topic or issue. For 7th graders, argumentative essays involve logically reasoning from evidence and considering other perspectives or opposing views. Students are expected to clearly state a position, support it with logical reasons and facts, acknowledge other positions, and use words that signal argumentation such as “because,” “however,” and “although.” The ability to logically reason from evidence and consider different perspectives is an important real-world skill, and argument essays help prepare students for discussion and debates on complex issues.
Informative/Explanatory Essays:
Informative or explanatory essays aim to explain or inform readers on a topic. These types of essays allow 7th graders to deepen their knowledge on a subject and effectively share information with others. Students should provide an introductory paragraph with a clear thesis, organize ideas by topic, use transitions to link paragraphs, and develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, examples, and quotes from sources. An effective conclusion should summarize without merely repeating information. Researching information from multiple credible sources and presenting it clearly teaches valuable research and nonfiction writing skills.
Analysis Essays:
Developing analytical skills is a key goal for 7th graders according to the CCSS. Analysis essays require breaking down a text, artwork, issue, concept, or other topic and examining its components or structure. Students should be able to objectively analyze given information, draw logical conclusions, and support inferences with text evidence or reasoning. Analysis essays strengthen critical thinking skills by having students closely examine how parts relate and how themes or mechanics contribute to a whole. Learning to analyze pushes students beyond mere comprehension to higher levels of interpretation and evaluation.
Research Skills:
Research skills are integrated into each genre of 7th grade writing. Students are expected to gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources and assess the credibility and accuracy of each source. They should be able to quote or paraphrase while avoiding plagiarism and following standard format for citations. The research process teaches information literacy, including determining angles to research, selecting appropriate keywords, and organizing and recording information systematically. Incorporating credible sourced evidence strengthens all types of 7th grade essays and furthers understanding beyond one’s own perspectives or opinions.
Revising and Editing:
Ongoing revision and editing is a focus within each writing unit at the 7th grade level. Students are expected to strengthen drafts by revising content, organization, style, and development as well as editing for conventions including grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Teachers guide the revision process with feedback, checklists, and peer reviews. Student authors should be able to rewrite portions to improve coherence and clarity, strengthen the development of ideas, and polish the expression of those ideas. Multiple drafts and editing helps reinforce grammar rules and aids in internalizing style rules when revising independently.
The different types of essays at the 7th grade level according to the CCSS provide structured practice and progressively deeper skill-building to prepare students for demanding high school expectations. Success in argumentative, informative, narrative, and analytical writing as well as research, revising, and editing lays groundwork for literacy, critical reasoning, and life-long learning. By following these standardized writing guidelines for each grade, students build foundational skills year after year to become strong and versatile writers.
