A thesis in an academic research paper is an argument advanced by means of reasoning designed to persuade an audience. Most academic research papers do indeed have a thesis statement. The thesis is usually introduced in the first paragraph of the paper and is the central argument to which everything else in the paper relates. The thesis statement presents not just a topic but an actual point of view on the topic.
The purpose of a thesis in a research paper is to give focus and direction to the researcher’s ideas and research and to provide unity to the discussion that will follow. When researching a topic for a research paper, students will generally come across a variety of sources that present conflicting ideas or data in relation to their chosen topic. By formulating a thesis at the outset, students must synthesize the various perspectives to develop and defend their own point of view on the topic. A thesis adds analysis, interpretation, perspective and opinion on the topic under examination.
A good thesis requires support, evidence and reasoning. It should not be a simple statement of fact or observation, but rather an interpretation or argument that can be discussed and supported. The paper would read like a collection of loosely related ideas on a topic without a focused theme or overriding argument holding them together. Many fields of academic research involve the formation and testing of hypotheses to add knowledge through original analysis and interpretation. For instance, in the sciences hypotheses may involve predictions about the result of an experiment that can be tested, while in the humanities and social sciences a thesis may posit an original analytical argument requiring evidence and reasoning in support. In any case, the process of research involves developing a thesis statement and building an argument through gathering and assessing sources to either prove or disprove the initial thesis. The thesis then drives the research questions and objectives.
For the thesis to work effectively in a research paper, it should be arguable, focused and specific. It should be a statement that intelligent and reasonable people could disagree on, debate and reasonably construct an argument against. An inarguable thesis is not appropriate because it lacks critical analysis. A broad thesis is also problematic for providing focus and direction. For example, stating “Gender roles have evolved over time” is too broad to adequately explore in a typical undergraduate research paper. By specifying a narrowed focus such as “Female participation in combat roles has challenged traditional gender roles within the US military since the 1990s” narrows the thesis to a claim that can efficiently be researched and argued.
A thesis must also be placed strategically, attracting interest while orienting the reader. Many academics suggest introducing it at the end of the first paragraph, before beginning the body of the paper. After introducing the topic and providing some context, the thesis is then a punchy statement that declares the direction and main argument of everything that follows. It must be clear and direct to leave no doubt in the reader’s mind about the central claim being made. Effective thesis statements avoid wishy-washy language like “may,” “might,” “possibly,” “perhaps,” and instead employ assertive verbs and language.
Within the body of the research paper, each paragraph should contain evidence and reasoning that supports the thesis in a clear, logical progression. The structure of each paragraph follows the thesis, evidence, analysis model to build the case. The conclusion then returns to the thesis to summarize how it has been successfully argued and proved, leaving the reader convinced. A clear, arguable and specific thesis is a fundamental requirement and organizing principle of academic research papers across all disciplines. It establishes the purpose and direction for the inquiry and argumentation to follow.
