Geographical information system (GIS) technology facilitates the creation of detailed, multilayered digital maps synthesizing diverse data sources into one interface. Users can access maps through desktop GIS programs, mobile devices or websites, query data layers, navigate seamlessly between scales and locations, calculate distances and areas, and leverage built-in analysis tools.

Future innovations will undoubtedly inspire novel map types, but the enduring value remains cartography’s ability to share spatial perspectives and insights between all who would explore unknowns or unpack what we already hold in common regard to the lands we inhabit. Understanding maps’ conceptual categories helps users select appropriate representations for any given informational or navigational need.
