William Henry Gates III, better known as Bill Gates, is an American business magnate, philanthropist, investor, and programmer. He is best known as the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation. Gates is considered one of the richest people in the world, having a net worth valued by Forbes magazine as of May 2022 at approximately US$126 billion. As of March 2022, Bill Gates has donated more than $36 billion to charity through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. He was bright from an early age, teaching himself programming at age 13. He attended a private high school and later enrolled at Harvard University. While at Harvard, Gates formed a partnership with Paul Allen and worked on breaking new ground in personal computer software. He dropped out of college in 1975 to pursue his business full-time.

Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their first product was the programming language Microsoft BASIC. By 1979, Microsoft had moved its headquarters to Bellevue, Washington, just east of Seattle. In 1980, IBM chose Microsoft to provide the operating system, MS-DOS, for its first personal computer. Following the success of MS-DOS, Microsoft launched Microsoft Windows. Microsoft Windows eventually overshadowed the MS-DOS system and the company became known as a leader in the personal computer software market.

Under Gates’ leadership, Microsoft established an early reputation for turbulent internal management practices. His management style favored an internal culture of “creative confrontation.” He demonstrated an aggressiveness and competitiveness that focused on beating the competition into submission. While this aggressive strategy had its drawbacks, as companies like Apple accused Microsoft of anti-competitive practices, it helped cement Microsoft’s dominance of the software market. Gates oversaw Microsoft’s global expansion, new product releases, and the rise of the worldwide popularity of the personal computer.

As the global demand for PCs and PC software soared, Microsoft’s coffers swelled accordingly. Gates’ success was defined not only through his financial worth but also through his philanthropic endeavors and charitable giving through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

While still CEO of Microsoft, Gates began to transition more of his time to philanthropic work, including his work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2000, Steve Ballmer replaced Gates as CEO so that Gates could increasingly focus his efforts on giving away his enormous wealth through the foundation. The foundation works to save and improve lives both in the United States and around the world. Some of its focus areas include global health, education, poverty alleviation and supporting marginalized groups in the United States. It invests in everything from vaccine research and malaria prevention to libraries, teacher training and helping community colleges boost graduation rates.
