Course Description
This essay writing course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to academic and professional essay writing at the college level. Through targeted lectures, guided writing exercises, and writing workshops, students will develop a strong foundation in the key elements of effective essay writing including how to choose an appropriate topic, conduct thorough research from credible sources, organize ideas into a clear structure, incorporate analysis and critical thinking, develop a persuasive written argument, use proper citations and references, and refine written expression to produce clear, coherent and concise essays.
By the end of this course, students will have the skills and confidence to successfully write essays for college classes as well as professional applications like cover letters, reports, proposals and more. Students will leave understanding how important essay writing is to their academic and career success and be able to transfer these newly learned skills to any writing tasks they encounter.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Choose an appropriate and interesting essay topic based on their interests, background, and the assignment guidelines
Conduct comprehensive research using a variety of scholarly and credible sources including books, academic journals, and appropriate websites
Organize ideas and arguments into a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion
Incorporate analysis and critical thinking by analyzing research sources and developing their own perspective
Use proper in-text citations and references to credit outside sources
Write clear, coherent and engaging prose using proper grammar, punctuation, and style guidelines
Refine their written work through a multi-stage revision and editing process
Feel confident in their abilities to undertake essay-based writing assignments across academic and professional contexts
Weekly Course Outline and Topics
Week 1: Choosing an Appropriate Topic
Students will learn strategies and best practices for choosing an interesting essay topic based on the assignment guidelines as well as their own interests and experiences. They will work through guided exercises to choose, refine and get approval for a topic to focus on for the remainder of the course.
Week 2: Conducting Effective Research
This module focuses on teaching students how to conduct a thorough literature review using scholarly academic journals. They will learn how to search databases, evaluate source credibility, and take notes in a structured format.
Week 3: Organizing Ideas and Creating an Outline
Students will learn proven methods and templates for organizing their research into a clear outline with an introduction, thesis statement, main body paragraphs, and conclusion. They will workshop outlines for peer feedback.
Week 4: Incorporating Analysis and Critical Thinking
The focus shifts to analysis – students will practice synthesizing research sources and developing their own distinct perspective on the topic. They will learn how to make logical inferences and draw conclusions supported by evidence.
Week 5: Grammar and Stylistic Elements
Proper mechanics, style, and flow are covered. Students learn how to vary sentence structure, maintain formality, and smoothly integrate analysis throughout their writing. One-on-one consultations available.
Week 6: In-text Citations and References
Guidelines for properly citing research sources in-text and providing a complete reference list will be covered. Students work through citation exercises and use citation management software.
Week 7: Revision and Self-editing
Multi-stage revision techniques and checklists are shared to help students strengthen content, organization, analysis, and expression. Peers provide structured feedback on works-in-progress.
Week 8: Final Essay and Self-Evaluation
Students submit a final 8-10 page essay incorporating all elements covered. Self-evaluations and end-of-course reflections on individual growth and new skills are submitted.
Assessment and Grading
Students’ progress and mastery of essay writing skills will be assessed through:
Participation in class lectures and writing exercises (10%)
Topic proposal submission (5%)
Annotated bibliography (10%)
Outline (10%)
Draft essay submission (15%)
Peer reviews of classmate drafts (10%)
Final essay submission (30%)
Self-evaluation and reflection (10%)
The grading scale is standard (A, B, C, etc.). Students must complete all major assignments to receive a passing grade. Instructors provide thorough written feedback to help students continually improve throughout the course.
