SPREAD THE LOVE...

My first campus interview experience was certainly one that I will never forget. As someone who was pursuing their undergraduate degree in Management, I was extremely anxious about appearing for interviews with potential employers that visited our college campus. After sending out dozens of applications, I was shortlisted for interviews by two reputed companies – a leading IT consulting firm and a fast growing e-commerce startup.

The interviews were scheduled a week apart to allow me enough time to prepare. I did extensive research about both the companies, their business models, leadership, culture, values and recent projects/initiatives. I also revisited all the concepts I had studied so far to be able to discuss them confidently if questions came up related to those topics. I practiced mock interviews with senior students to get comfortable answering behavioral and situational questions on the spot. Most importantly, I focused on understanding the job roles I had applied for in depth to clearly convey why I was a strong fit during the interviews.

A few days before the first interview, I was going over my notes when I suddenly started feeling very nervous. What if I forgot important details during the interview? What if I couldn’t explain my experiences and qualifications well enough to convince the hiring managers? Worst of all, what if I completely froze up or said something stupid? I tried various breathing exercises to calm my nerves but nothing seemed to be working. I was losing sleep over worrying about how the interview would go.

The big day finally arrived. I got up extra early to ensure I had plenty of time to get ready and cover all the points I wanted to discuss one last time. On the way to campus, I went through my notes in the auto-rickshaw to distract myself from feeling anxious. When I reached, I saw other students who had interviews lined up as well. We exchanged encouraging words while waiting outside the interview room.

My first interview was with the IT consulting firm. I was called in and warmly greeted by the two interviewers. We sat down and had a brief casual conversation to help break the ice. Then, they dived right into the behavioral questions. I took a deep breath and drew from my preparations to answer confidently. The rest of the interview went smoothly as we discussed projects I had worked on, my coursework, strengths, areas of improvement and why I was a good fit for the role. I made sure to maintain eye contact, smile and speak clearly throughout.

Before I knew it, the allotted time was up. The interviewers thanked me for my time and said I would be notified of the outcome within a week. I walked out feeling a mix of relief it was over but also wishing I could have performed even better. Later that evening, I reflected on the experience and notes I could improve for the next interview. Overall, I felt reasonably good about my first attempt and was glad to have the jitters out of the way.

A few days later was the second interview, this time with an energetic e-commerce startup that was making waves in the industry. By then, I was much more comfortable with the process having been through it once already. I was also better prepared to highlight specific examples from my profile to each role-related question posed. The interviewers for this company were more informal and the discussion flowed more like a friendly conversation. We even bonded over our mutual interest in the latest technologies and business disruptions.

Before I knew it, an hour had passed talking enthusiastically about the company’s vision and products. They concluded by asking me about my availability if selected. I thanked them for their time and stepped out feeling very positive about this experience compared to the first one. Indeed, with each additional interview I attended on campus, I gained more confidence in my abilities and presentation skills. The learnings from that early stumbling block helped me perform exceedlessly well in subsequent rounds.

A week later, I received a call from the IT consulting firm offering me the job, to my elation! I had evidently done well enough in that first nerve-wracking interview to impress them. Being selected after my debut campus interview experience was extremely validating and a huge confidence boost. Though the startup ultimately chose someone with more directly relevant experience, I was not disheartened. I knew I was now properly equipped to make an even stronger case for myself at future opportunities.

Looking back, I see how far I have come since those initial shaky moments filled with doubt. Campus recruitment drives expose students to real-world interview dynamics and the hiring process at an early stage of their career. While the experience can be intimidating, it offers invaluable lessons on interacting confidently with potential employers, clearly articulating your value proposition and keeping calm under pressure. By deliberately practicing and continuously honing communication skills, anyone can get better at acing interviews with time. I’m grateful for the learning from my raw first campus interview that set me on the path towards professional success.
