Essay writing thesis statement exercises are a great way for students to practice formulating thesis statements and get constructive feedback to improve. Here are some common thesis statement exercises with examples:

Brainstorming exercise: This open-ended brainstorming activity helps generate initial ideas that could form the basis of a thesis statement. Students are given a broad essay topic and allotted time to freely jot down possible angles, perspectives, or arguments they could take. For example, if the topic is “social media”, potential brainstorming ideas could be: the positive/negative impacts of social media on social interactions, how social media algorithms influence our behaviors/opinions, the role of social media in modern political campaigns/movements, etc. No ideas should be evaluated or eliminated during brainstorming.

Thesis building exercise: After brainstorming, students take one or more of their ideas and build them into full thesis statements. A full thesis statement clearly answers the basic questions of “what” is being argued, “why” it matters, and has a debatable stance. For example, a student may take their brainstormed idea of “social media algorithms influencing behaviors” and turn it into: “Social media platforms use targeted advertising and content recommendation algorithms that subtly influence users’ behaviors, opinions, and decision making in ways that could threaten individual autonomy and democratic processes.”

Thesis revision exercise: This exercise challenges students to refine and strengthen existing thesis statements based on instructor feedback. Students may be given thesis statements with flaws like being too narrow, broad, vague or non-debatable and asked to revise them. For instance, a student may receive the thesis “Social media has negative and positive effects” which is too broad. They would narrow it to something more focused and argumentative like “While social media enables easier global communication, it has exacerbated the spread of misinformation worldwide.”

Thesis banking exercise: In this exercise, students develop a “bank” of polished thesis statements on a topic that could be reused for future essays. They brainstorm extensively on a subject, form numerous thesis statements from different angles, and then evaluate and strengthen each one with peer and instructor feedback. The finished thesis statements are catalogued for future reference. For a history topic like “The Civil War”, example thesis statements in a student’s bank could focus on causes, turning points, impacts on race relations, political implications, and more.

Counterargument thesis exercise: This challenges students to formulate thesis statements that acknowledge and address counterarguments. They may be provided with a basic thesis and asked to expand it to preemptively address one or two likely objections. For instance, if the original thesis was “Smartphones have improved modern communication”, they could augment it as “While smartphones have undeniably improved accessibility and speed of communication, over reliance on them can weaken in-person social skills and attention spans.”

Thesis swap exercise: Students exchange draft thesis statements with peers and provide substantive feedback focused on clarity, argumentation, scope and areas for improvement. They then revise their own statements based on this peer review. For instance, if a classmate’s thesis on school uniforms stated “School uniforms reduce distraction”, they could suggest strengthening it by specifying what kind of distraction or tying it more clearly to student performance or safety.

By regularly practicing thesis statement formulation exercises across various prompts and topics, students get valuable practice unpacking the components of a strong thesis, considering different perspectives and evidence, responding to critique, and continuously refining their argumentation skills. These exercises normalize the iterative process of crafting a thoughtful thesis statement and prepare students to confidently tackle new essay assignments.
