The methodology section of a research paper outlines the procedures and steps that were undertaken to collect and analyze data related to the research question. This section allows readers to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability. Its purpose is to describe the methods taken in enough detail that other researchers could potentially replicate the study. This section typically follows the introduction and precedes the results section.

In the American Psychological Association (APA) style, methodology sections are distinctly formatted. They normally start with a centered, boldfaced heading entitled “Method.” The sections then describe details around participants, materials, procedure, design, and data analysis. Let’s review an example methodology from a hypothetical APA-style research paper:

Method

Participants

A sample of 120 undergraduate students (60 men and 60 women) between the ages of 18 to 25 years old was recruited from introductory psychology courses at a mid-sized public university. Participation was voluntary and participants received course credit for their involvement.

Materials

Two questionnaires were used to collect data – a demographic questionnaire and the Big Five Personality Inventory. The demographic questionnaire gathered information on age, gender, year in school, ethnicity, and major of study. The Big Five Personality Inventory is a 44-item measure that assesses the five domains of personality: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Participants responded to statements on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). This inventory has demonstrated good reliability and validity in previous research.

Procedure

After obtaining approval from the university’s institutional review board, the primary researcher visited introductory psychology courses to recruit participants and schedule data collection sessions. During scheduled sessions, participants were provided with an informed consent document explaining the voluntary and confidential nature of the study. They then completed the paper-and-pencil questionnaires in randomized order in classrooms containing no more than 30 students. At the end, they were fully debriefed and thanked for their time.

Design

This study utilized a between-subjects correlational design to examine relationships between personality traits and choice of college major. The independent variables were the five domains of personality as measured by the Big Five Inventory. The dependent variable was choice of college major from eight options provided on the demographic questionnaire (biology, business, communications, education, engineering, psychology, social sciences, undecided).

Data Analysis

Data were analyzed through IBM SPSS statistical software using correlations, ANOVA, and regression analyses. Pearson product-moment correlations evaluated associations between personality domains and choice of specific major categories. One-way ANOVAs compared personality scores across the eight major categories. Finally, a linear regression model was used to assess whether personality predicts choice of college major after controlling for demographic variables like gender and ethnicity.

This example template elucidates key methodological details that researchers should aim to include in an APA-style methodology section. Proper elements addressed were participants, materials, procedure, design, and data analysis. Specifying these facets allows readers to critically evaluate a study’s internal and external validity. It also permits replication of methodology to extend research findings. Adhering to standard APA formatting guides ensures method sections are cohesive, clear, and appropriately situated within the paper’s overall structure.
