The introduction presents your topic and provides context and background for readers. It includes a hook to engage readers and states your thesis statement, which is usually 1-2 sentences summarizing your main argument and conclusions. The introduction is typically 3-5 paragraphs long.
The body paragraphs form the bulk of your paper and each body paragraph focuses on one of the main points that supports your thesis. The first sentence of each body paragraph introduces the topic that will be discussed. Each body paragraph includes at least 3-5 sentences of analysis, evidence, examples, or facts that prove the point. Connective transition words and phrases help link sentences and smoothly move between ideas. The last sentence of each body paragraph summarizes the main idea.
The conclusion restates your thesis statement and provides a summary of the key points covered. It does not present any new evidence or information. The conclusion leaves the reader with a sense of closure by tying everything together. The conclusion is usually 1-2 paragraphs long.
