The format and structure presented here is a general one; the various scientific journals, publications, texts and conferences often have specific requirements for submitted papers, so always check the specific guidelines for the publication or event to which you are submitting. Most scientific research papers will contain the following basic structure and layout:

Title

The title should be clear, brief and targeted. It should accurately reflect the content and scope of the research paper. Omit unnecessary words and keep it to 12 words or less. Avoid vague or ambiguous wording that does not clearly communicate the key focus or findings. The title is the first impression a reader will have, so choose it carefully.

Authors

List the names of all authors of the research paper. Conventions for author name format and ordering varies between fields and types of publications. Generally, list authors in the order of their contribution, with the primary author listed first. Middle initials are sometimes used. Affiliations and institutions of each author can be included below the names.

Abstract

The abstract, or summary, is a short paragraph, typically between 150-250 words. It provides a brief yet thorough overview of the research paper. State the research problem or question, research methods, key findings or data, and main conclusions or results. The purpose is to inform potential readers about the scope and significant outcomes of the research contained in the full paper in a clear yet concise manner. Abstracts allow readers to quickly vet large numbers of publications to find those most relevant to their needs or interests.

Introduction

The introduction should accomplish several goals: it should introduce the topic of the research paper, review the relevant literature, and explain how the study advances knowledge. Provide a clear statement of the research problem or question. Review relevant theoretical frameworks and summaries of previous research literature and findings to define the context and knowledge gaps the current research aims to address. State the goal or hypothesis of the current study and provide a high-level overview or roadmap of how the remainder of the paper is organized.

Research Methods

Describe the research methods and procedures in detail sufficient to allow another researcher to repeat or reproduce the study. This generally includes descriptions of key variables and measures, data collection methods and instruments used, sample characteristics, sample size justification, data analysis procedures, statistical techniques, ethical considerations and limitations. The methodology used must allow the research findings and conclusions to be assessed for validity and reliability. Key details to highlight include research design and approach (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods), data sources, sampling techniques, validity and reliability of data collection instruments used.

Results

The results section should present key findings in a clear, factual, non-biased manner supported by evidence, graphics, statistical analysis, quotes or other data that allows objective evaluation. Do not interpret or analyze results in this section. Present tables and figures to display quantitative results clearly. For qualitative studies, present supporting quotes or illustrative examples as evidence. Provide a clear explanation of how each result addresses the research question. Organize results by importance so the key findings that will answer the research question are presented first. Use subheadings to group and separate different types of results.

Discussion

The purpose of the discussion section is to analyze and interpret the findings and results in the context of previous literature. Discuss what the results mean and whether they support or contradict past studies. Identify limitations and delimitations of the research. Interpret results to derive conclusions and inferences, and generalize findings to a broader context or new perspective. Relate results back to the significance of the initial research problem stated in the introduction. Propose further research questions or ideas based on this study’s conclusions. End with a concise conclusion that recaps the main findings and their implications.

References

Include a reference list at the end for all citations within the text formatted according to the requirements of the specified publication style guide, like APA, MLA or Chicago. Each reference should contain key details of publication date, title, journal or book source, author(s), location and publisher. List references in alphabetical order by author last name. Ensure references are accurate and consistently formatted throughout to allow readers to easily locate cited sources.

Here are some additional key points about the published research paper format:

Use single spacing and 1-inch page margins. Double space between sections. Number pages consecutively starting with the title page.

Use an easy to read san-serif font like Arial or Calibri size 11-12. Bold or italicize for emphasis. Center section titles.

Write in a clear, precise, yet engaging academic writing style using the active voice where appropriate. Avoid colloquialisms and personal pronouns.

Carefully proofread for spelling, grammar, punctuation errors before submitting. Have others review as well to get additional perspectives.

Consider visual elements like charts, graphs, images or sidebars to break up blocks of text and engage readers. Must relate directly to and enhance understanding of the research context and findings.

Length of a full research paper will vary depending on requirements and topic, but 10-15 pages single spaced is average without visuals. Conferences may have strict limits.

Consult the applicable style guide for in-text citations, figures/tables, heading levels, quotation integration standards and other manuscript guidelines.

Following a standardized research paper format ensures consistency and professionalism in submitted work, and allows readers and reviewers to easily evaluate key components. Adhering to structural conventions for scientific writings facilitates communication between researchers and demonstrates credibility and validity to merit consideration and impact for other scholars in the field.
