The title page is one of the most important elements of your research paper as it introduces the topic and establishes credibility. A well-formatted title page according to the guidelines of your style guide ensures your paper gets off to a good start. Much like the quality of the content, the appearance and structure of your title page conveys a sense of professionalism to the reader.

The basic format required for a title page in APA, MLA, and Chicago styles includes key identifying information about your paper presented in a clear, hierarchical structure. Your title page should include the title of the paper, your name, the name of your institution or college, the course name or number if applicable, and the date of submission – all centered in the middle of the page. On research papers longer than 10 pages, your title page should also include a running head on the top left corner consisting of an abbreviated title in all capital letters.

For APA style papers, the running head should be no more than 50 characters including spaces and typed in all capital letters. It should appear on the title page and all subsequent pages of your paper. On the title page only, include the words “RUNNING HEAD:” before the abbreviated title. For example, a running head for a paper titled “The Impact of Title Length on Creativity” would be:

RUNNING HEAD: IMPACT OF TITLE LENGTH

For MLA style papers, your title page should only include the title, your name, instructor or professor’s name, course name and date in the left corner of the page with no running head. The title itself should be centered and typed in size 12 Times New Roman font. If your title is long, only capitalize the first word and proper nouns to aid readability.

Chicago style title pages follow a similar format and hierarchy as APA but require fewer details. The title should be centered and typed in bold font one or two sizes larger than the main text. The title is followed on subsequent lines by your name, the date, and course information if needed – each left-aligned. On papers exceeding 15 pages, a shortened version of the title is included in the page header on the top left.

Regardless of the formatting style, every element on the title page must be double-spaced including your name, institution/school name, date and running head. No extra spacing should be added between these elements. The title itself is centered and typed in the same font and size as the main text of your paper. Author names are written in reverse order, with the last name first followed by a comma and initials.

Page numbers are not used on title pages in any style, but the page is still counted as page one. The title should be concise yet describe the main topic and scope of your paper accurately in 13 words or less if possible. Vague or ambiguous titles make the purpose and key arguments difficult for readers to immediately grasp. Being direct yet compelling is ideal for capturing interest.

It’s common for students to spend more time refining the content than properly formatting title pages, but taking the time to ensure it visually represents your work in a neat, organized way reinforces credibility. Consistent formatting allows readers to efficiently identify key details like authorship, topic and course relevance at a glance. Professional title pages complement papers that present original analysis backed by thorough research and compelling writing. Whatever your field of study, investing effort into the appearance and structure of your title page according to guidelines pays off.
