The GED writing test requires test takers to respond to an assigned topic by composing an organized essay under timed conditions. The writing sample must demonstrate a command of standard written English and the ability to develop and express ideas coherently. During the test, you will be given 90 minutes to plan, write, and revise your response. In this time, you need to demonstrate proficiency in the following skill areas:

Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics: Command of standard written English conventions such as grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

Style: Adherence to an appropriate academic and formal style with objective tone. Clear, fluent, and varied writing.

Scoring is based on a scale of 0-8 points across five trait categories: Focus, Organization, Development, Language Usage, and Conventions. Responses must effectively address the prompt in a persuasive, explanatory, or descriptive manner. GED testing recommends practicing with sample prompts and scoring guides to become familiar with expectations. Here are some sample essay topics and responses:

My local community of Springfield could benefit greatly from improvements to our public parks and green spaces. As our city continues to grow more developed and urban, it is increasingly important that we preserve areas for community recreation and family time outdoors. Many of our city parks are lacking resources and have fallen into disrepair over the years.

One park near my home, Elmwood Park, used to be a vibrant community hub where families spent summer evenings and kids playground games for hours. With these renovations, I believe Elmwood Park could once again become a treasured destination where families spend afternoons and make lifelong memories together. Overall, investing in our parks would help Springfield foster a stronger sense of community pride and belonging for years to come.

Topic: Discuss the impact of technology on communication and relationships. Consider both benefits and drawbacks.

Modern communication technologies from cell phones to social media have profoundly transformed how people interact and connect in both positive and negative ways. On one hand, digital tools have made it easier than ever to stay in touch with loved ones who live farther away. Texting, video chat services, and messaging platforms allow for near instant correspondence regardless of distance that helps families feel closer together. Setting device-free times and maintaining scheduled offline activities with loved ones can help combat potential deterioration of interpersonal skills or loneliness due to overdependence on technology alone.

Strict limits and set “device-free” times could help address issues like distraction and habituation to hyper-stimulation that harm users’ mental health and true community involvement if reliance grows too extreme. Overall, the potential negative impacts of social media on attention spans, living in the moment, spreading misinformation, and surface-level relationships outweigh its benefits for most of society today.
