A research paper outline is a useful tool to aid in the writing process, both by acting as a guide throughout the research and writing process, and serving as a rubric for structuring the final research paper. Research paper outlines provide structure and guidance for topics that can at times become broad and unfocused. An outline helps predict where a topic may lead and ensures the paper remains on target.

A typical research paper outline follows a standard formatting. This includes an introduction, body, and conclusion. From there, each of these sections has additional subsections that provide the overall structure. At the top of the outline are Roman numerals, uppercase and lowercase letters, and Arabic numerals that provide identifiers. The structure looks like this:

I. Introduction
A. Opening paragraph
B. Thesis statement
C. Roadmap (brief preview of topics to be covered)

C. Main point 3

III. Conclusion

B. Summarize main points
C. Close with final thoughts

The introductory section serves to introduce the topic and purpose of the research paper. This includes an opening paragraph that provides background on the topic and leads into the thesis statement. The thesis statement is a single sentence that declares the focus and key argument of the paper. A roadmap provides a preview of the subsections under each main point that will be covered in the body.

The body is the meat of the research paper and holds the bulk of the content. The body breaks down into multiple main points or arguments that support the overall thesis. Each main point is assigned a Roman numeral and header. Under each main point, there are subsections that further expand on the main point and provide supporting evidence and details. These subsections are labelled with uppercase letters.

For example, if the main point is analyzing three key perspectives on a topic, each perspective would be its own main point and assigned a Roman numeral (II, III, IV). Under each perspective, there would be one or more supporting details in subsections labeled A, B, C and so forth depending on how many details are provided.

The concluding section provides closure to the paper by recapping the thesis and main points covered. It should not simply restate but synthesize the major themes and arguments of the paper. The conclusion leaves the reader with final thoughts on the significance and implications of the research.

Beyond the basic outline structure, additional components can be included:

When outlining a paper, leave space under each main point and subsection to later insert citations and quotes that will provide evidence and support. The outline keeps the research focused on one key thesis while allowing flexibility to modify as new facts emerge during the writing process. Developing a strong outline establishes an organized structure before diving into writing the paper itself. This ensures the final paper follows a clear, logical flow supported by relevant points. The outline format provides a framework to build upon and deliver a well-structured research paper.
