SPREAD THE LOVE...

Introduction:

Going on holiday is a wonderful way to relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life. Whether traveling domestically or internationally, taking a vacation provides an opportunity to see new places, try different foods, and make lasting memories. With so many destination options available, deciding where to visit can feel overwhelming. Reading reviews from other travelers who have visited potential holiday spots is a helpful way to gain insider insights and determine if a certain location would be a good fit. Reviews allow prospective tourists to learn about the pros and cons of hotels, activities, restaurants, transportation, and more from a consumer perspective. In this essay, I will analyze what makes for an effective holiday review and provide examples from my own travels along with excerpts from reviews found online.

Components of an Effective Holiday Review:

Location details: The most basic yet important information a review should include is where exactly the reviewer visited – the country, region, specific city or town. Names of hotels, resorts, or other accommodations help paint a clearer picture. This contextualizes the experiences and opinions shared.

Dates of travel: Providing the months or specific dates the reviewer was at the location helps determine how applicable their insights might be. Some places are busier or offer different activities depending on the season. Reviews from travelers visiting at different times of year can give a well-rounded view.

Transportation: How the reviewer got to and moved around their destination is worth mentioning. Did they fly and rent a car? Take trains or buses? Use rideshares? Details on transportation methods, costs, convenience contribute valuable logistical knowledge.

Accommodations: Lodging is a core component of any holiday. Reviews provide details on where the reviewer stayed such as hotel name and star rating, room type, cleanliness, amenities, location, and value. Photos can enhance these descriptions.

Activities: Highlighting sights seen, tours taken, restaurants visited, and other experiences at the location offers concrete examples of how one can spend their time. Opinions on what was most memorable or worth prioritizing help future travelers plan enjoyable itineraries.

Overall impression: Summarizing their general feelings about the destination, whether positive or negative, gives readers a sense of if it seems like somewhere they’d also enjoy or may not be a good personal fit. Reasons behind these overall impressions are insightful.

Recommendations: Suggesting whether or not the reviewer would return themselves and why provides a clear takeaway for potential tourists. Would they advise others visit as well, and maybe even share favorite spots that live up to the hype?

Holiday Review Example #1: Trip to Barcelona, Spain – Summer 2018

My family and I recently spent a week in Barcelona in July 2018. We flew from New York City to Barcelona Airport, which took around 8 hours. The flight was smooth, and we had no issues with our luggage. From the airport, we took a taxi into the city which cost around 30 euros and took 30 minutes due to traffic.

We stayed at the boutique Hotel 1898, a 4-star property located right in the Gothic Quarter. The rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated in a vintage Spanish style. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the narrow streets below. The hotel offered a breakfast buffet each morning with a variety of foods like pastries, eggs, fruit, and Spanish ham. It was also within easy walking distance of all the major attractions.

Each day we woke up and walked around the neighborhood, stopping in local cafes for coffee and pastries. A must-do is visiting La Boqueria market – it’s stunning inside and you can pick up foods to picnic in the park. We spent afternoons at Park Güell, the beach, and the Picasso Museum, which had a fascinating collection and was surprisingly uncrowded for a major city museum. Nights were spent wandering Las Ramblas, taking in live music, and dining on paella and tapas.

The only negatives were the high tourist crowds in August – it was hard to move around some days. Also, Barcelona is quite hilly so we did a lot of walking! The charm and culture of the city more than made up for that. We loved blending in with locals and especially appreciated how safe it felt. I would highly recommend Barcelona for its architecture, atmosphere, and easygoing Mediterranean lifestyle. We can’t wait to return someday to explore more of Catalonia.

Holiday Review Example #2: Family Trip to Disneyland Tokyo – Spring 2019

My husband and I took our two young daughters (ages 5 and 3) to Disneyland Tokyo in late March 2019. We flew Japan Airlines from San Francisco to Narita Airport, a 10.5 hour journey. At the airport, we purchased Tokyo Disney Resort Express train tickets which dropped us right at the park entrance in about an hour for only 3,000 yen per person each way.

We stayed at the Disney Celebration Hotel located inside the resort. The hotel had a whimsical Disney theme throughout with characters appearing daily. Our room was clean, spacious and had a kitchenette which allowed us to keep snacks and breakfast items. Their pools and recreation areas were great for letting the kids burn off some energy too.

All four parks (Disneyland, DisneySea, recreational area Ikspiari and neighboring Universal Studios Japan) were amazing. Disneyland in particular exceeded expectations – the attention to detail and variety of rides for all ages had us exploring non-stop. Top experiences included rides like Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, Space Mountain, and It’s a Small World. Character meets were also very well organized. The whole experience was seamless from utilizing the resort buses and monorail system to the cleanliness and customer service everywhere.

While expensive, the JR Rail Pass and multi-day Disney tickets paid off. We easily filled 5 full days without feeling rushed. The only downside was navigating Japan as non-Japanese speakers but Disney staff and printed information handily resolved any hiccups. The food was also mostly in Japanese but incredibly high quality for theme park fare. I would rate this a perfect family vacation – the kids loved it and created memories to last a lifetime. DisneySea is calling us back for sure!

Holiday Review Example #3: Solo Working Trip to Lisbon, Portugal – August 2021

In August 2021 I had the opportunity to spend 10 days working remotely from Lisbon, Portugal. I arrived on a Saturday evening flight from London and took an Uber from the airport to my Airbnb apartment in Martim Moniz Square near Avenida da Liberdade. The driver spoke good English and gave me some dining recommendations along the way.

My apartment was spacious, with high ceilings, hardwood floors and lovely natural light – exactly as pictured in the listing. The wifi worked perfectly for video calls and uploading files. Being right in the city center put me within walking distance of everything. Mornings were spent working at local cafes like Pantufas or Cafe Sao Paulo – the wifi was fast and staff friendly. I’d grab lunch at Mercado da Ribeira for fresh seafood and walks along the Tagus River during breaks.

Evenings were for exploring neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto full of restaurants, bars and live music spilling out onto the streets. Favorite finds were Taberna da Rua das Flores for its cozy atmosphere and Bacalhau da Nora – outstanding bacalhau dishes. On weekends I did day trips to Sintra with its fairy tale castles and coastal towns like Cascais. Transportation was easy via Uber or local buses/trams.

The laidback Lisbon vibe paired with good work WiFi made this a highly productive trip. Seeing an new city alone pushed me out of my comfort zone but locals were friendly. While pricey, this location maximized productivity better than a standard beach vacation could have. I’d love to return to explore more of Portugal’s natural beauty and culture. Lisbon has a special charm – it was hard to leave!

Holiday Review Example #4: Family Vacation to Hawaii – Summer 2023

We recently returned from an amazing 2 week Hawaii family vacation in July 2023. As a family of four, we flew American Airlines from Los Angeles to Honolulu, which took about 5.5 hours. The kids did well on the flights with entertainment and snacks.

We spent the first week on the island of Maui, based out of Kaanapali Beach. We stayed at the Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa right on the beautiful white sand beach. The large resort offered 5 pools, multiple restaurants, a spa and activities desk for booking excursions. Our 2 bedroom ocean view condo had a full kitchen and was comfortable for our family. Mornings were leisurely with the included breakfast before hitting the beach or pool all day.

Some of our favorite Maui activities included the Road to Hana tour for beautiful scenery, snorkeling in Molokini Crater, and exploring Haleakala National Park to see the sunrise from 10,000 feet. We also took a catamaran dinner cruise and the Old Lahaina Luau. Service and hospitality were outstanding everywhere on the island. Fresh seafood and pineapple everything was delicious.

For the second week, we explored Oahu – from scenic drives around the coast to touring historic Pearl Harbor. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa with great pools and locations. Highlights were hiking to waterfalls like Manoa Falls, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, and checking out
