To password protect individual sheets in an Excel workbook, you need to first enable the protection functionality. Then you can select the sheets you want to protect and add a password. This protects the sheets from edits or viewing by others without the password.

The first step is to enable worksheet and workbook protection. Go to the Review tab in the ribbon and click the “Protect Sheet” or “Protect Workbook” button depending on if you want to protect just sheets or the entire workbook. Next, you need to provide a password. Type a password into the Password field and confirm it again in the Confirm Password field. Make sure to choose a strong password that is not easy to guess. You can then click OK to apply the protection with password.

Now your sheet or workbook is protected, but not the specific sheets you want. To protect individual sheets within the workbook, you need to select those sheets by clicking on their tabs. Then go back to the Review tab and click “Protect Sheet” again. This time only the selected sheets will have protection applied and prompt for the password on opening or editing.

You can select multiple non-consecutive sheets by holding Ctrl while clicking their tabs. Or select a range of tabs by clicking the first tab, then shift-clicking the last tab. Make sure only the sheets you want protected are selected before hitting the Protect Sheet button again.

Some important things to note when password protecting sheets:

The password will be required to unprotect the sheets as well as when first opening the file to view or edit the protected sheets.

Users without the password cannot see or modify any parts of the protected sheet, including cells, charts, images, etc. This protects the content and structure.

Content or elements on unprotected sheets remain editable without the password even if other sheets are protected.

Protected sheets can still be viewed in “readonly” mode without the password to see content but not edit anything.

Sheet and cell protection settings are remembered separately. Cells can be locked even if the sheet tab itself is unprotected.

Strong, unique passwords are important for security. Don’t use common words or personal names/details that could be guessed.

Store the password securely in a separate location from the file in case it’s forgotten.

Protection can be removed from sheets or the entire workbook by selecting previously protected elements and re-applying the protection without a password.
