The remainder of each body paragraph should present textual evidence or examples that prove the topic sentence. Whether paraphrasing from the play’s text or directly quoting lines, students should thoroughly explain and analyze each bit of supporting material. Effective body paragraphs will be at least three to five sentences each. As the teacher, emphasize using concrete examples from the source material rather than vague generalities. Showing students how to select impactful evidence and incorporate smooth transitions between ideas strengthens the coherence of the analysis.

The conclusion paragraph should not introduce any new information but instead reiterates the main points of the essay in a broader context. Effective conclusions do not merely restate the thesis. Rather, they review what was covered in the body paragraphs and leave the reader with a final message or takeaway. For the Romeo and Juliet essay example, a concluding paragraph may say: “Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers undergo immense transformations as they defy their families’ hatred to pursue their love. Romeo grows from a lovesick boy to a bold risk-taker, while Juliet blossoms into a passionate woman. Their doomed relationship highlights how overwhelming love and social pressures can change even the most reluctant hearts. Though ending in tragedy, the story of Romeo and Juliet demonstrates the transformative powers of deep affection.”

When teaching students the five paragraph format, emphasize proper essay structure, flow of ideas, and development of a cohesive overall argument as the ultimate goals. Advise focusing first drafts solely on content before revising for style, grammar, and mechanics. Model how to plan essays using outlines noting the thesis, points of each body paragraph, and concluding message. Provide rubrics clarifying expectations. Assign frequent low-stakes formative writing to give students practice applying the structure in different contexts with timely feedback.
