Participants

If human subjects were involved, state that their participation was voluntary and approved by an Institutional Review Board. For data collected from archive sources, specify where it came from.
Materials and Apparatus
List and describe in detail any materials, measures, questionnaires, surveys, tests, or equipment used to collect and analyze data. Provide information on the development and validation of tools created specifically for the study. Include copies of measures in an appendix if it significantly improves understanding and allows for replication. Reference any pre-existing, validated tools by citing the original source.
Procedures
Provide a step-by-step description of the procedures undertaken to complete the study in chronological order. Include details on how participants were recruited and assigned to conditions. Describe the experimental manipulations or activities in sufficient detail that another researcher could replicate them. Explain how and when any measures were administered. Note the duration of participation and any follow-up procedures. Include screenshots, diagrams or flowcharts if they help illustrate aspects of the procedure clearly.
Data Analysis
Specify the statistical tests, analytics program, or qualitative analysis approach used to analyze the collected data. Clearly explain how variables were operationalized and any data cleaning or reduction steps. State the alpha level used and whether any correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Describe how the data met the assumptions of the statistical test chosen. Provide in text citations of precedents for unconventional analyses to support their validity.
The methods section should be written clearly and comprehensively to demonstrate the rigor of the research design and procedures. Allow readers to evaluate if appropriate methods were used based on the research questions and objectives. Address threats to internal and external validity to assess how the study design minimizes bias and enables generalization. Include all information necessary to replicate the study fully or continue the line of research, like locating raw data or materials in an appendix. Adhering to these guidelines will result in a high quality, logically structured methods section for a research paper.
