Writing a research paper, even a mini one, requires following a specific process to ensure your paper is organized, well-researched, and effective at communicating your ideas. Here are the key steps to take when writing a mini research paper:

Choose a Topic
The first step is selecting a topic to research. For a mini research paper, you will want a narrowly focused topic that is not too broad. Brainstorm potential topics that interest you, then evaluate each topic’s scope – is it narrow enough to thoroughly research in the page limit but broad enough to have sufficient information available? You can discuss potential topics with your instructor to get feedback on topic choices.

Conduct Preliminary Research
Once you have a topic, do some preliminary research to learn the general parameters of information available on the topic. Search library databases and search engines using keywords related to your topic to identify 5-10 scholarly sources that could provide useful information. Examine sources and take notes on the key arguments, research methods, and conclusions so you can start mapping how the research approaches and contributes to the topic. This preliminary research helps ensure your topic is narrow enough to thoroughly cover.

Create an Outline
Develop a basic outline to map the structure and progression of ideas in your paper before starting to write. At minimum, the outline should include an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with supporting points, and a conclusion paragraph. Within each paragraph, jot short notes on the key information, sources, and how they will contribute to discussing your topic and drawing a conclusion. The outline keeps your writing focused and organized.

Write the Introduction
The introduction should introduce your topic, state why it is significant or warrants research, provide essential context or background for readers, and present your thesis statement capturing the main argument or conclusion you will prove. It piques the reader’s interest and indicates the scope and direction of the paper. Keep the introduction relatively short at 3-5 sentences maximum for a mini paper.

Develop the Body Paragraphs
Each body paragraph should be dedicated to discussing a separate sub-topic or key element that supports proving your thesis. Within each paragraph:

Start with a topic sentence clearly stating the focus/central point to be discussed.

Provide analysis of and evidence from 2-3 relevant sources to support the point, summarizing and synthesizing source information.

Explain and analyze how the sources and information connect to and influence the topic point.

Use transition sentences to connect each body paragraph’s discussion to the overall thesis argument.

Include in-text citations, and maintain a consistent citation style throughout.

The body paragraphs form the analytical core where you discuss and connect evidence from sources to support proving your thesis in a logical flow.

Write the Conclusion
The conclusion should not simply restate your thesis but take the analysis a step further by emphasizing the significance, implications, or “so what?” of your overall argument. You might also suggest avenues for potential future research on the topic. Ensure the conclusion ties back to and flows cohesively from the body paragraphs’ discussions. Finally, reiterate your thesis statement through rephrasing it to conclude the paper.

Proofread and Edit
Once you have completed the paper draft, set it aside for a day if possible and then thoroughly proofread and edit to refine the work. Check for:
