The introduction is the first thing the reader encounters in a research paper, thereby making it one of the most important sections of the paper. An introduction aims to introduce the topic, provide background context and a thesis statement. Here are some guidelines for writing an effective introduction for a research paper:

Start with an attention grabbing statement: You need to engage your reader right from the beginning. Open with an interesting fact, statement or question related to your topic to spark curiosity in the reader. For example, if you are writing on the topic of climate change you could start with something like “The average global temperature has increased by 1 degree Celsius over the past century, according to NASA – a rate of increase that is unprecedented over past 1,000 years”.

Provide context and background: Give contextual information about the topic to help the reader understand why it is important and relevant. Briefly discuss the history, prior research studies or general information pertinent to familiarize the reader with the basics of the topic. For example, if your paper is about methods to improve computer security, provide a brief overview of computer hacking incidents over the years.
