Our national flag is a symbol of our nation that fills us with a sense of patriotism and pride. The Indian tricolor flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on July 22, 1947, a few days before India gained independence from British rule on August 15. It was designed by Pingali Venkayya, an eminent freedom fighter and member of the Home Rule League.
The Indian national flag has three horizontal strips of equal width. From top to bottom they are of saffron, white and green. The saffron color signifies courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation. The white in the center represents peace, truth and purity. The deep green color at the bottom stands for faith, fertility and prosperity of the land. Adopted on our Independence Day in 1947, it is revered and respected by every Indian.
At the center of the white band is a Navy-blue wheel which represents the chakra (wheel). Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Its blue color signifies the sky, the life-force and indicates the nation’s quest for progress and peace. It has 24 spokes that represent the hours of the day and the months of the year.
No other flag in the world has a wheel on it. Our national flag thus stands apart as an unique symbol of our society, civilization and culture. The Ashoka Chakra brings in an ancient heritage but also stands for the dynamism of a modern nation and its accelerating progress. The presence of the Ashoka Chakra lends emphasis to the principle of dharma or righteousness and the constitutional goals of establishing a just society.
Our founding fathers had carefully selected and incorporated the symbols, colors and design of our national flag to reflect India’s ancient cultural heritage and its journey towards becoming an independent nation. The saffron, white and green color scheme was inspired by the flags of Indian independence movements like Swaraj movement led by Lala Lajpat Rai and Congress. It is given due national honors befitting its sacred status in accordance with the provisions made under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. No Indian citizen can use our tricolor flag for any other purpose other than for honoring and respecting it. Destroying or disrespecting the national flag is considered an act against national honor and punishable under law. During national events like Independence Day, hoisting and unfurling the flag with due honors is an integral part of the celebrations.
As we approach the 75th anniversary of our Independence over the next few years, the Indian tricolor flag will continue to grow in symbolic significance as a symbol of our unity in diversity. It represents the shared legacy of all Indian citizens regardless of their different faiths, languages, castes or communities as proud members of a secular democratic republic.
