A Journey of Self-Discovery
Creative writing allows one to explore aspects of life through fictional storytelling. One format is a coming-of-age journey where the protagonist transforms after experiencing people, places, and lessons learned along the way. This essay describes such a journey of self-discovery through a short story.
John was a 17-year old high school senior eager to graduate so he could escape his sleepy small town of Riverdale. While his friends were excited for prom and college parties, John felt an emptiness inside and a desire for something more. One night, he had a vivid dream where a mysterious voice told him, “it is time for your journey to begin.” The next morning, John knew what he had to do – leave Riverdale and experience the world on his own personal quest.
He told his parents he was taking a gap year to travel before college. While they protested, saying it was too risky, John was determined. He packed a simple bag with clothes, a first aid kit, camera, and journal. With $2000 in savings, John hit the open road, destination unknown. His first stop was the Grand Canyon, always wanting to see its immense natural beauty in person. As he gazed upon the vast orange landscape, John felt small yet part of something bigger than himself. He camped under the stars, journaling about finding his place and purpose.
After a few days exploring the canyon trails, John continued west. In Utah, he met a group of rock climbers who invited him to join their expedition up a challenging sandstone wall. Scared yet excited, John strapped on the gear and began ascending. Foot by foot, he pushed past fear, trusting in his abilities and the ropes above. Reaching the summit, the view took his breath away and a newfound confidence emerged within. The climbers celebrated John’s achievement over a campfire that night. He realized how kindness from strangers could uplift your spirit on a journey.
Now in California, John worked odd jobs up and down the coast – picking fruit, washing dishes, serving coffee – just enough to cover travel and simple living. In San Francisco, he crashed on a couch of a friend he met climbing. By day, John explored Golden Gate Park, Fisherman’s Wharf and the eccentric Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. His perception of “home” expanded beyond Riverdale’s borders with each new environment. In LA, John wrote postcards to his parents, assuring them he was learning and growing through experiencing life on his own terms.
On a whim one afternoon, John hopped a freight train heading north. As he gazed out the open boxcar door at the vast countryside passing by, a feeling of freedom and wanderlust overcame him. That nomadic lifestyle appealed to his desire to constantly discover what lay around the next bend. After a safe ride through Oregon and Washington, John eventually made his way to Glacier National Park in northern Montana. The raw wilderness there spoke to his soul. He took a seasonal job as a park ranger to immerse himself further.
Over the summer, John learned the names of plants and animals, navigation skills, wilderness first aid and backcountry safety from the more experienced rangers. He loved teaching visitors about nature’s beauty and the importance of conservation. John realized how much he valued wide open spaces, simple living close to the land, and helping others appreciate their natural heritage. His self-doubts faded away as purpose crystallized – to protect wild places and help people connect with the outdoors through interpretation and education.
By fall, John’s journey was coming to an end. He bid farewell to his ranger family, promising to return. With savings from the summer, John enrolled at the University of Montana to study environmental science. No longer lost or empty, John’s journey allowed for self-reflection and identity formation. By experiencing different people, places and challenges along the way, he gained invaluable life lessons that shaped who he became – confident, independent, caring for nature and finding purpose through public lands stewardship. While the open road called to his spirit, for now John was content with the direction uncovered during his transformative travels. His rite of passage proved how a self-guided journey can uncover one’s true self and path ahead.
When John returned to Riverdale for Christmas his freshman year of college, his parents could not believe the young man before them. Gone was the unsure teenager – in his place stood a self-assured, adventurous spirit with passions and dreams. While his travels took him far and wide physically, John’s real journey was one of inner discovery. Creative writing allows one to walk in another’s shoes and experience life’s lessons through fictional storytelling. This coming-of-age tale portrays how hitting the road with an open and seeking heart can unveil one’s calling. A journey provides transformative opportunities to grow into who we are truly meant to become.
