Introduction
Different learning styles refers to the concept that individuals differ in how they absorb and process information. The idea is that by improving “teaching” methods to accommodate different styles you can enhance learning and improve student achievement. The validity and usefulness of learning styles in education has been controversial. This research paper will examine the major theories behind learning styles, summarize key research studies on their validity and impact on learning, and discuss implications for education.
Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic Model
One of the most widely known and applied models of learning styles is the visual, auditory, kinesthetic (VAK) model. This model suggests that there are three main sensory modalities—or pathways in the brain—through which people receive and process information: visual (spatial), auditory (auditory-musical), and kinesthetic (body-sensory) (Shrestha, 2017).
Visual learners prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding to learn.
Auditory learners prefer using sound and music to learn.
Kinesthetic learners prefer using their body, hands and sense of touch to learn (engaging in hands-on tasks like role-playing and simulations).
Advocates believe identifying a student’s primary learning style can help teachers better accommodate individual learners by incorporating different activities that leverage their modal strengths. For example, a visual learner might benefit from diagrams, flow charts, and color coding whereas an auditory learner may learn more from lectures, verbal explanations, and group discussions. Numerous studies over the past few decades have questioned the validity of this model.
Criticisms of the VAK Model
A major criticism is that there is insufficient empirical evidence that individuals reliably learn better through only one sensory modality versus another (Pashler et al., 2008). Research suggests people can and do learn through multiple pathways simultaneously and preferential learning styles may change depending on subject matter, context, and other factors.
Additionally, the questionnaires and tools used to categorize learning styles are subject to bias and provide inconsistent results over time. Students may vary in how they report their own learning preferences, making it difficult to achieve a valid and reliable style profile for any one individual (Kratzig & Arbuthnott, 2006).
Finally, even if valid learning style assessments could be developed, there is little evidence that changing instructional methods to suit different style strengths significantly improves learning outcomes compared to traditional teaching (Sollaci & Pereira, 2004). Well-designed, empirically validated instruction tends to benefit all styles of learners regardless of their profile.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Jungian Theory
The MBTI is another widely used learning style model rooted in Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. It classifies people into categories based on their preferences in four dimensions: extraversion vs. introversion, sensing vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, perceiving vs. judging.
Similar to VAK, the MBTI assumes people learn best in a style aligned with their preferences on these four dichotomous scales. The MBTI also lacks empirical support and suffers many of the same criticisms (Pittenger, 2005). Research shows the type categories based on self-reported preferences often do not correlate with actual patterns of behavior, interests or abilities.
Additionally, no strong evidence suggests that adapting instruction to an individual’s assumed MBTI profile leads to better learning compared to traditional teaching practices not based on types. While the theory offers some interesting concepts regarding personality, its validity and usefulness as a framework for learning styles remains questionable.
Dunn and Dunn Model
The model proposed by Rita and Kenneth Dunn is one of the more comprehensive and widely recognized approaches to learning styles. Their model defines five major stimuli that may impact how students learn:
Environmental (sound, light, temperature, design)
Emotional (motivation, persistence, responsibility, structure)
Sociological (self, pair, peers, team, adult)
Physiological (perceptual, intake, time, mobility)
Psychological processes (global/analytical, impulsive/reflective)
Like the previous models, it assumes each individual learns best through specific combinations of these elements, as determined through questionnaires. Teaching methods should then accommodate these distinct profiles by appealing to and building upon the student’s strengths.
Research reviews also find minimal support for Dunn and Dunn’s theories (Kratzig & Arbuthnott, 2006; Pashler et al., 2008; Coffield et al., 2004). A major issues is the model captures a vast array of variables that interact in complex ways, making distinct and consistent learning styles difficult to differentiate empirically. Moreover, there is little evidence changes based on style assessment meaningfully enhance learning outcomes.
Conclusions and Implications
Collectively, decades of research has failed to provide strong or consistent evidence that individuals possess distinct learning style profiles that require accommodating instruction to realize their full potential. Assessments purporting to classify styles also lack reliability and validity.
While intuitive appeal of matching instruction to assumed preferences persists, well-designed teaching addressing a variety of modalities tends to benefit all learners regardless of assessed style. Focusing excessively on styles may distract from research-validated practices proven to raise achievement across populations.
At the same time, some concepts from learning style theory—such as capitalizing on different sensory channels, offering choices, and appealing to diverse interests—remain reasonably practical to consider within instruction. Despite unsupported as distinct profiles, these practices align with differentiated instruction more generally.
Overall, while the notion learning styles seem plausible, current evidence does not support their use as a framework to improve education or as a basis for large-scale reform. Further research could still illuminate how individuals differ in their learning processes; for now alternative approaches show greater promise for enhancing student success. Recognition of styles’ limitations can prevent resource misallocation and guide focus to validated techniques.
This research paper examined several major learning style theories including VAK, MBTI, and Dunn and Dunn. It summarized evidence that questions the validity and usefulness of classifying individuals into distinct learning style profiles. Implications are that focusing extensively on adapting to presumed styles may distract from research-backed practices proven effective across student populations. At the same time, differentiated instruction appealing to varied modalities in moderation could still reasonably fall within best practices. Additional rigorous studies are still needed to fully understand individual differences in learning.
