Introduction
Love is a complex phenomenon that has interested philosophers, scholars, and researchers for centuries. While love is a universal human experience, defining and understanding it scientifically has proven quite challenging. The purpose of this research paper is to review what is currently known about love from psychological and neurological perspectives. Specifically, this paper will explore the biological and evolutionary roots of love, common stages and types of love, as well as theories that have attempted to explain this powerful emotional experience. Challenges in defining and measuring love will also be discussed. Overall, the aim is to synthesize key findings from love research and highlight important areas for continued scientific inquiry.
Biological and Evolutionary Basis of Love
One way researchers have sought to understand love is by examining its biological and evolutionary origins. Various theories posit that love evolved over millennia as an adaptive mechanism to promote mating and child-rearing behaviors that increased reproductive success and survival of offspring (Finkel et al., 2012). From this perspective, love likely arose due to its advantages in enabling bonding between parents as well as between parents and children. Key supporting evidence includes the role of neurotransmitters and brain regions associated with attachment and reward processing that are activated during events of nurturing, caring, and intimate bonding associated with love.
Major neurotransmitter systems implicated in the experience of love include dopamine, norepinephrine, oxytocin, and vasopressin. Dopamine is associated with the euphoric highs of being in love and increasing motivation to pursue romantic partners (Aron et al., 2005). Oxytocin, often called the “love hormone”, is linked to social bonding, intimacy, and parenting behaviors and has been shown to increase when people experience acts of love and affection like hugging and orgasm (Carter, 2014). One influential model proposed by psychologist Robert Sternberg (1986) describes three primary components of love – intimacy, passion, and commitment – that can exist in varying degrees across different relationship stages. Intimacy involves feelings of closeness, passion refers to physical and sexual attraction, and commitment is the decision to love the other person. According to Sternberg’s triangular theory, different relationships are characterized by different mixtures of these three love components.
Other common stage models describe an early “lust/infatuation” phase marked by intense romantic feelings and sexual attraction that lasts 6-18 months.
