Competition – Amazon faces stiff competition from other large tech companies expanding into e-commerce like Walmart, Apple, and Alphabet in various product categories. New competitors also regularly emerge with innovative business models. Leadership needs strategies to stay ahead of competitors.

Internal Analysis
Amazon’s internal culture and structure also pose challenges to leadership. While Amazon has built an very efficient machine, some issues exist:

Centralized power structure – Decision making remains tightly centralized around founder Jeff Bezos. Leadership style is very demanding with intense workplace culture. This is becoming less effective as company scales.

Bureaucracy – Amazon’s hierarchical layers and detailed process management have led to increased bureaucracy hampering innovation. Leaders at lower levels lack empowerment.

Excessive focus on growth – Relentless focus on rapid growth and numbers led to issues like lack of focus on sustainability, workplace culture problems, failure of some projects/products.

Talent development issues – High attrition rates despite good pay. Lack of empowerment, unchallenging work for some, and intense culture led many talented employees to leave. This is a risk for future.

Organizational silos – Separate teams compete internally instead of collaborating. Lack of collaboration across hardware, logistics, AWS, Whole Foods could limit synergy benefits.

Intense workplace culture that disregards work-life balance will continue losing talented employees long term even with high pay and weakening organizational capabilities.

Not demonstrating enough responsibility with influence and scale Amazon has achieved risks losing trust with customers and governments amid increased regulatory scrutiny around antitrust, privacy and wages.

Leadership lacks diversity which is critical to understand needs of a diverse workforce and customer base better. More female, ethnic diversity in senior roles is required.

To remain a visionary company that attracts talent top, maintain competitive advantage amid disruption while catering to changing demands, Amazon leadership needs to evolve beyond its original strengths and address weaknesses through cultural and strategic reform.
