It allows students to pursue careers in virtually any industry or functional area of business from finance and marketing to operations and general management. While the flexibility of an MBA is an attractive aspect, it can also lead to uncertainty regarding career goals without proper planning. As someone pursuing an MBA, developing a clear and actionable career plan is essential for maximizing the return on your educational investment.
In this career plan essay, I will layout my short and long-term post-MBA career goals as well as the strategies and activities I plan to undertake during my time in the MBA program to help achieve those goals. I recognize that an effective career plan will need to be dynamic and allow for adjustments based on new opportunities and insights gained throughout the MBA experience and beyond. Starting with a well-defined initial plan will help guide me and increase the likelihood of achieving fulfilling career outcomes after graduation.
My short-term post-MBA goal is to gain experiences across different functions and industries to determine the career path that best leverages my skillsets and interests. With an undergraduate background in computer engineering, I have spent my early career in technology roles with limited exposure to other areas of business. An MBA from a top-ranked program will open many doors, but to truly maximize the career opportunities, I will need to inform myself on the various options.
To achieve this goal, my plan during my first year is to complete internships in at least two different functions or industries. Specifically, within 5-7 years post-MBA, I aim to be a Director of Product Management, Growth Strategy, or Innovation at a technology company. Roles of this level would allow me to own initiatives from conception to execution, manage cross-functional teams, and directly contribute to the growth of innovative products and companies.
To achieve this long-term career goal, I plan to thoughtfully select my concentration courses and electives at business school to ensure a strong grasp of core disciplines like finance, operations, and strategic management. Complementing these more traditional subjects, I will take courses in digital marketing analytics, product management and design thinking to stay on the cutting edge of technology trends influencing business models and customer experiences.
