Studying for an MBA is a major commitment that requires significant time, effort and financial investment. Therefore, it is essential to have clear and well-defined objectives for pursuing an MBA in order to maximize the return on your investment. Your objectives will guide you in choosing the right MBA program, courses and extracurricular activities during your studies. They will also help you leverage your MBA upon graduation to achieve your short and long-term career goals.
My key objectives for studying for an MBA are:
Gain a Strong Foundation in Core Business Functions – I believe a major benefit of an MBA is the opportunity to gain a broad yet in-depth understanding of the various core business functions such as finance, accounting, marketing, operations, organizational behavior, strategy and general management. Studying these subjects from an integrated, cross-functional perspective taught at leading MBA programs will help me develop a holistic view of business that I could not obtain through work experience alone in a specialized role or single business function. The analytical and quantitative skills I will learn can also be applied to any business problems and opportunities I may encounter in my career.
Develop a Global Mindset – In today’s globalized business world, international exposure and cultural awareness are crucial for success. My goal is to leverage the diverse, international student body and opportunities available through global study exchanges, overseas internships or consulting projects at my prospective MBA programs. I want to gain first-hand experience working across cultural and organizational boundaries to better understand different markets and manage businesses worldwide. Exposure to international perspectives will also help me stand out to future multinational employers.
Gain Leadership and Management Experience – While I have strong individual skills from my previous roles, I aspire to one day take on broader leadership responsibilities requiring team-building abilities, influence strategies and people management skills. The group projects, case competitions and extracurricular leadership roles available through top MBA programs are uniquely designed to develop these “soft” skills in a safe, learning environment. Participating in these activities will allow me to prove my leadership capacity to future recruiters and work on areas for improvement identified through peer and professor feedback.
Expand My Professional Network – An important objective is to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships with my highly accomplished MBA classmates and professors who will become part of my network for years to come. This network can provide advice, opportunities and referrals that help advance my career. Many MBA alumni also play important roles at top organizations, so these relationships may prove invaluable for recruitment or even starting my own business in the future. Beyond the classroom, I aim to participate in career fairs, company info sessions and alumni mixers to maximize networking.
Prepare for a Career Transition – My current role in product marketing is satisfying in the short-term but I seek to transition into a more strategic role with broader responsibilities like brand management, business unit leadership or general management within 5-10 years. An MBA from a renowned program will give me the credentials required to qualify for these types of jobs. I also intend to complete an internship in my target career field and leverage electives, professor recommendations and career services to make this transition as smooth as possible. Ultimately an MBA will help me achieve my long-term ambition of leading multimillion-dollar business units within elite consumer brands.
Gain a Competitive Advantage in the Job Market – The sad reality is an MBA alone may no longer provide much of an “advantage” given the significant number of programs. My aim is to leverage my MBA program’s top ranked status, selective admission process and accomplished alumni community to set myself apart. I will supplement my core degree with concentration-level knowledge, publishing articles, case competition wins or venture consulting experience that demonstrate advanced skills. My relentless networking efforts will also help translate these experiences into new opportunities at prestigious companies.
I believe clarifying my key objectives in advance will help ensure I enroll in the right MBA program, complete relevant internships, take valuable electives, participate actively and ultimately leverage my degree in a way that maximizes my long-term career potential and earning power. It is critical I achieve each of these goals to justify the investment of both time and money an elite MBA demands. With proper planning and execution aligned to my objectives, I am confident an MBA will open new doors personally and professionally.
