Writing the methodology section of a research paper is very important as it allows the reader to critically analyze the research process and determine the legitimacy of the findings and conclusions. Research Design

Procedures
Provide a step-by-step description of the procedures followed in the research from start to finish in chronological order. Detail exactly what the participants experienced at each step including the time commitments, any training, instructions given, independent and dependent variables manipulated, treatments administered. Explain how the data was collected at each step through observations, surveys, experiments, recordings, etc. Note any changes made to the procedures after pilot testing or initial implementation.
Data Analysis
Outline the specific statistical or qualitative techniques used to analyze the collected data including the reasoning for selecting each approach. For quantitative analysis, identify the inferential and descriptive statistical tests conducted (t-tests, ANOVA, regression etc.), levels of measurement, statistical software used, and how the assumptions of each test were addressed. For qualitative analysis, describe the coding and theme development processes, how credibility and trustworthiness were established, and if a computer program was used.
Research Ethics
Discuss the measures taken to ensure ethical conduct of research and protect participants. Provide details of human subject approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB), how informed consent was obtained, potential risks minimized, and participants’ anonymity, confidentiality and right to withdraw guaranteed. Note if incentives were provided and their nature. Address ethical concerns in data handling, analysis, reporting, conflicts of interests, research bias and social implications of findings.
Validity and Limitations
Acknowledge the limitations and threats to validity within the research design, methodology, instrumentation and data analysis approaches. Address how they were mitigated through triangulation, pilot testing, reliability/validity evidence etc. Admit any unavoidable limitations that may impact the generalizability or credibility of results based on the research approach used. Discuss ways others can build upon the findings through alternative methodology.
The methodology section demonstrates to readers the systematic and organized approach taken in the research process. By providing rich detail of each component, it allows for critical analysis and replication of the study.
