Introduction
This report is about the findings from a survey conducted among 100 students from XYZ College on their views regarding the Malaysian University English Test (MUET). MUET is an important examination for undergraduate students in Malaysia as results from this test are used by public universities as a requirement for admission and course placement purposes. The objective of this survey was to understand students’ perceptions and levels of preparedness for the MUET examination with a focus on the report writing component.
Methodology
An online questionnaire containing both closed-ended and open-ended questions was developed to gather feedback from students. The closed-ended questions focused on collecting demographic details of respondents as well as their opinions using a 5-point Likert scale. The open-ended questions allowed respondents to provide elaborative comments. Approval to conduct the survey was obtained from the college administration. Students from all academic years between the ages of 18 to 25 years were invited to participate in the survey through announcements made on the college Learning Management System (LMS). Participation was voluntary and informed consent was obtained from all respondents. A total of 100 responses were received within a two-week period. The data was then sorted, coded and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Direct quotes from open-ended responses are included in this report where relevant to support the quantitative findings.
Key Findings
Based on the survey results, the following were the major findings regarding students’ experiences and perceptions of the MUET report writing component:
Familiarity with MUET Format: Majority of the respondents (85%) reported being somewhat familiar or very familiar with the MUET format especially the time constraints and assessment criteria for each component. However, 15% indicated they had little to no familiarity.
Preparedness for Report Writing: When asked about their level of preparedness for the report writing task, 60% felt somewhat prepared while 30% felt underprepared. Only 10% felt very prepared stating they had undertaken sufficient practice. Lack of regular practice was cited as a reason for feeling underprepared.

Importance of Report Writing Skills: Virtually all respondents (99%) agreed or strongly agreed that report writing is an important skill for their future studies and career. They recognized the value of learning to analyze information and present it in a logical, cohesive manner.
Assessment of Own Report Writing Ability: Respondents were asked to assess their own report writing skills. While 50% felt their ability was average, 40% rated it as below average mainly due to insufficient practice. Only 10% considered themselves above average in report writing.
Areas of Difficulty in Report Writing: When questioned about the aspects of report writing they found most difficult, organizing information logically (60%) and time management (50%) emerged as the top two challenges. Expressing opinions/recommendations (30%) and incorporating statistical data/quotes(20%) also posed difficulties for some.
Usage of Resources for MUET Preparation: Textbooks (75%) and past year papers (60%) were cited as the most used resources by respondents to prepare for MUET, especially the report writing section. Fewer indicated they took tuition/workshops (25%) or used online practice tests/resources (15%).
Lecturer Feedback and Guidance: Most respondents agreed or strongly agreed (85%) that it would be helpful to receive more structured lecturer feedback and guidance on report writing skills and exam techniques. This included areas like sample analyses, regular shortwriting practices and mock tests under timed conditions.
Conclusion and Recommendations
While majority of the surveyed students were familiar with the MUET format, more than half felt underprepared for the report writing component specifically due to insufficient practice. Their self-assessments also indicated average to below average ability in this area. Additionally, many experienced challenges with organizing information and managing time during the exam.
Based on these findings, it is recommended that:
Lecturers at the college design and incorporate report writing skill development activities into their teaching methodology across different subjects/modules. This will enhance regular practice opportunities for students.
Structured workshops focusing on exam techniques and model answers be conducted, especially for those in their pre-MUET years. Mock tests simulating real exam conditions should also be held.
One-on-one consultations or small group guidance sessions be made available to assist students struggling with report organization, expression of opinions/recommendations or data/quote incorporation.
An online report writing resource centre be developed on the LMS providing samples, tutorials, additional practice questions and feedback mechanisms.
The college consider ways to promote usage of online practice resources as an additional preparation method.
Implementing the above recommendations can help boost students’ confidence and competence in tackling the MUET report writing task. Proper exam preparation will maximize their chances of achieving a good MUET result, thereby increasing their eligibility for admission into local public university programs.
